I pull in the light classes with a B and C Allis Chalmers and have done so for a number of years. I found that running higher RPM's did almost nothing as far as total distance. It would give a faster speed and if the sled was set up to go half way down the track it would give a slight advantage over the lower setting. If the sled was set up for most tractors to go over 200 ft. it would still run out of power at about the same place as the lower RPM setting. I could not improve my pulls with a higher RPM untill I worked at increasing the HP.

A governor spring in itself is not going to give you more power, if the current governor is already adjusted properly. If the current governor is opening the throttle butterfly fully when the engine comes under load, changing the spring isn't going to allow the butterfly to open further and let more fuel and air in. A different spring may effect how quickly the carb opens fully, but can't open the carb any further if it's already going wide open.

If your running a speed limit class, and you have made it half way down the track at half throttle, and you open the throttle up it's my opinion that the faster throttle respond would make your tires break loose quicker.

We run wide open throttle from the line. It just runs out of power on the big end. My kids just pull till it quits in 1 gear.

All of the N series Fords I have seen pull were geared fast and work great with a box blade, but lacking the horsepower to equal the gearing. Like G-man said check the simple things first including a compression check. If you can locate someone with a dyno, you can get the most out of what you have. If your pulling light and the kids are enjoying it I wouldn't worry to much, but if you wanna get a little further down the track, put some shorter tires on it, or build the engine above stock specs..

Check to make sure that the governor is opening the carb all the way up. If it is, a different spring isn't going to help.

That could be, but that still isn't going to change the maximum power output of the engine. If the throttle plate is open all the way, and the engine produces X horsepower at Y rpm, the engine doesn't care if it's a governor spring, tarp strap or a simple cable that's holding the carb open. If he thinks changing the spring is going to give him more power, that's just not going to happen.

If you wind a Chads spring up real tight just before hooking to the sled and let it loose it may help a 8N ford, besides that I think it will take more then a spring.
