Has any one played with the weights in a JD governor? Do lighter or heavy weights have a advantage over the stock weights for throttle response or for lugging. Thank's for any info.

I keep hearing all this talk about governor springs and weights. I know on my tractor the linkage opens the carb, and the governor closes it. Unless you're trying to run higher rpms I just don't see much gain in messing around with it.

I tend to agree. A two-cylinder governor tries to strike a balance between spring tension created by throttle position and centrifugal force created by the weights as they rotate and are flung outward. As long as the governor is opening the throttle fully under load to begin with, changing weights or springs isn't going to affect that. It may slightly change the operating characteristics of the governor at idle and part throttle, and change how fast it opens up, but it's not going to gain you horsepower. And at the low engine and wheel speeds that most two-bangers operate at, I can't see an advantage if a modified governor opens the carb two seconds sooner than it would otherwise.

I have to agree wiht Flooger and G-Man if its working leave it be because no matter what you do the governor weights and spring they have to work together, and in no way will you ever gain any horsepower from "fooling" with a governor.

Just adjust the throttle linkage tighter (bending the governor spring more) it hunts a little at idle. With the passing of 44+ years the spring gets tired or maynot have been set correctly in the past.

The original Gman (Gman413) has the B weights in his... I have mine drilled and shaved.. and balanced them.. (match the weight of the two.)

Lighter weights rev higher before there is enough centrifical force to pull the linkage.

I would look at the spring,, that seemed to help the G I worked on,, I put a small piece of baling wire around the spring, and the linkage to set the 10 over rpm, just slides along the spring assembly, and Used a piece of tape to hold it in place. ChadS

we run strings on the governor..but the weights would make a different effect if you dind't run strings...we use hoseclamps..and on our stoked A we have a double spring..but we dont' run it wide open..its only 7.25"..but it shakes so bad that we don't like to wind it..:S....our family likes to wind them 2cyl....we got an A we specifically like to wind..prolly 2k plus...

Is it an older A? Why would it be so out of balance? How about the governor weights from like the newer models, for the B, a 50, or 520,530, A 60-620-630, G,70,720,730? Is any of those compatible? Those governors run a duplex carb, so would they be any more sensitive or respond any different than the older ones? Chad
