You 8n Ford guys dont know what real horsepower is. Back in the fifties my neighbor had 40 acres of soybeans which he harvested with an 8n and ac all crop 60 combine. Two 40 inch rows of 25 bu. beans was just too much for the old Ford, he had to overhaul it every year after he was done.Being atinkerer what we now call ashadetree mechanic he made up some adapters and dropped in a 53 Ford flathead v8.Dont bother fooling with a governor, hook er up direct har har har .With the over under trans it made some of the v8 Ford cars look pretty silly on the local gravel and dirt roads.Handled his little combine right well after that too.True story.

Gee, you suppose that flathead V8 had similar HP & torque to my 8N flathead Funk 6? A 30 or 40 HP 8N is a very convenient little tractor.
The 8N's where generally underpowered with ample strength drive trains (for the stock engine power). But you can NOT put 100 HP through the drive train of these little things (without scrapping the whole tranny and diffy and putting in a new one).

For the 8N nay sayers. The 8N is in the same class as the Farmall Cub or John Deere L. I know which one of these tractors is stronger. An 8N will never be in the same class as a Super M, Ollie, MM, G, or some other big tractor. No way no how. So next time somebody wants to slam an 8N cause there big tractor can pull much more, I say no kidding.

How bout' an M-M R? The tranny has it's limits, but nice chunk of iron. Any Jubilees out there? M-M 335 is quite beefy for a little doo-doo machine. Farmall 300 Utility?

We farmed 80 acers with a Ford Furguson when I was a youngster after the war with the Germans was over and I was great for its time. They had less power than a 8n but that tractor was trouble free as long as we owned it. Actually I beleive they were comparable with the John Deere MT and Farmall C.

If I remember right, the Ford Fergey was a 8N drivetrain but had the better overhead valve Continental engine in it. It came about when Henry and Harry had there falling out and before Harry met the Harris family.

Jerry, I believe you've got the right comparison, at least with the Farmall. Having used both a 9N and a Farmall C, I think powerwise they're probably on a par with one another.
