MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) will turn the pipe white.

Big mess going on in Fallston, MD with MTBE well pollution. About 5 miles from me, an Exxon station has polluted over 60 wells and counting. Exxon has been installing carbon filtration systems in affected homes within a 1 mile radius. The scary thing is that the station still is well within the leakage or ground concentration limits. I read somewhere that MTBE can travel through the pores of steel.

The county this is located in has issued a ban on all new gas stations located in areas serviced by well water. Maryland Department of the Environment has been testing hundreds of gas stations throughout the state and quite a few of our politicians are trying to pass an MTBE ban.

I used to run av-gas in one of my old trucks. The lead in the gas would cause the inside of the pipe to turn white. It was 100LL (low lead), which really has a lot more lead then what was in the old regular gasolines for cars. You can get it at any small airport. The last time I worked at a small airport it was $2.25 a gallon which was 10 years ago.

This is just from what I have learned over the years (does not make it a fact though) You can not get your pipe to turn white or light gray with todays unleaded gas. It does not matter how lean you go. Back when there was lead in the gas you could always tell if the motor was a good one by the tail pipe color light color meant that it did not use oil. I have never seen a pipe turn anything but black in todays gas.

Bud, I bet I know which tractor you are talking about,,,, I dont think it is in the fuel in his litte front tank on it that is causing it, look closer to the big ol LP tank still on the tractor, makes me wonder what is in it? Just my 2 cents,,, ChadS

Also, our club needs to have a tech crew, and, they should know what to look for. Would be amazed on what a tech person will find, if he/she inspected the pullers more closely. ChadS
