You can back that screw out, allowing the governor to let the rack open up more, and it probably wont smoke a lot, it will some, but not excessively. If you have a dyno, that is the best way to see what works best, and then on the track. You wont damage anything on the fuel system, maybe your engine if it is wore out, but I doubt it. good luck

Gpower,

I have found that on the late 720/730s with the fuel return from the rack, that it is pretty tough to over-fuel them with the rack screw. I have an early 720 and don't have the screw half way out, but my dad has a late 720 (everything is in top shape) and it won't smoke too bad with all the rack adjusments maxed out.

I second the dyno suggestion. If you really look, it's not too hard to find a dyno to use even if it costs a little. When you dial everything in on the dyno, you know exactly what you have.

I know what you mean on the return line. I pulled against several 730 diesel that "modified" that return line..lol. They will lay down the smoke at the end. You can also "modify" that governor rod in there as well! Dyno"s are good to have, I know of a good M&W P-2000 (If I recall) it will handle up too 400 hp. if anyone wants to buy it.

Depends on the condition of the fuel forwarding/primary pump if it will even make pressure. The relief valve has to be in good condition and not using the undersized replacememt plunger from Deere. Usually needs the body bored oversize to true it up and a custon oversize "plunger" machines so fuel can't bypass around it. Some careful spring shimming is required so the feedback pressure doens't hold the plunger in the "start" bypass position. An external shut off valve is a quick and dirty "fix". The late 720's and 730 had the "peanut" fuel injector cam lobe to prevent running the engine backwards. They need more primary pressure than the 70's and early 720's.

BD, we have found that if you just forget the transfer pump, and us an electric one...you dont have to worry about the pressure, or leaking into the crankcase. Yes, I know its not factory, but when you want a good constant pressure, (sometimes higher than factory) and no worries thats what happens. You can install the electric fuel pump, even keep all the factory parts on the tractor, and have it where if you were just passing by, no one would ever know.

I was thinking of doing that with the 840"s when restored. A hidden fuel pump switch would be great security.

I'm just starting the restoration of a 730D, planning to pull it next year. I've got a lot to learn. On the topic of fuel injection - do any of you guys know of any publication or book on how to get the fuel system optimized for antique pulling (within the rules of course)? I'm a newbe, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would definitely be interested. I have been half heartedly looking for a dyno for a while. I used to have your email, but not any more. Email me some details please.
