My brother pulls a 1943 JD B. His first gear is a lot faster than the later B's, or the earlier ones for that matter. They always seem to put 10-20 feet on him... Can the 1st. gear or ring and pinion be changed??? Or is this a case of wrong transmission for the job...Any ideas...Thanks.

Is the "B" powering out? If so, I would put my efforts into getting more power than slowing it down. If you do want to slow it down, the place to do it is the 1st reduction gear. I know the A/60/620 gears are interchangeable (as a set) and would guess that the B/50/520 series might also interchange. WTW could probably confirm if this is do-able. Just remember that speed is your friend when getting down the track. Mike

What size tires are you running? That's pretty fast in low gear.

The 43 B was rated for 18.53 belt HP & 2.33 MPH in 1st gear. Must have the rpms cranked up to 1500-1600 rpm even allowing for the tall tires. Some serious engine mods too. The 47 to 52 B was rated for 27.5 belt HP and 1st gear was 1.5 mph.

The final drive/bull gears on the 520/530 are slower but don't know if they will bolt in. Many of the other trans gears will swap from a styled B up to the 530. I would agree with some engine work for little more "putt" instead.

Heisler head... also getting hard to find... not so easy tricks.. but cheap.. (I think the 43 still had the small bore..) it can be bored to .250 over... the crank can be offset ground to fit the early rods.. but the early rods were only babbited.. (I haven't found a source for the small bearings.. ) You know the rest.. stroke it.. (not cheap.)
Good Luck.
