Ok, Sorry for the off topic here, My 93 F-350 died on me. Need some help,, What had happened, was, I got some bad fuel from the station, and had a lot of water in it. I had to drain and flush out the fuel system,, I cant seem to get the injector pump bled to the injectors now. I had tried to use the starter to rotate the engine to prime the system, but,, that is alot of wear and tear on the starter,, and to no avail, still wont pump up,, Got fuel to the pump, but wont bleed through,,, What is happeneing here? Is the pump not priming because of the slow rate at which the starter rotates the engine? Even if the stater could handle cranking it,, it would probably take 1 hr or so to actually prime it,, any ideas on how to get it going?? I have not ruled out the pump going out,, but it ran the nite before after changing the bad fuel out with new,,, I had shut the engine off, and would not start the next day, I opened up the lines to the injectors,, nothing there,,, is it being a (^&%^*(&^ to bleed, or should I look for a new pump? Any info would be great! Thanks, in advance,, ChadS

loosen the injector lines and drag that sucker around.Look at it ocasionally and when you get good fuel spitting, tighten them down and drag it some more. I had a 6.9 I changed the pump on and I liked to have never got it bled out I must have dragged that thing 3 miles.

I'm certainly not an expert but I had trouble with my 7.3 a couple years ago. It was still running okay when the change filter light came on. I changed fuel filter, it started, smoked, bucked and shut-off. It would not bleed at schrader valve. Eventually found delivery pump was bad. If you need to change this pump, make sure engine is at top dead center (marked on balancer) pump is difficult to install otherwise. After replacing delivery pump I picked up 10 mph towing over the same PA hills and it starts much easier now.

Chad,

I've dealt with quite a few engines of that family line over the years. Have seen them run out of fuel before or changing fuel filters, it's the same effect. The fuel filter mount should have a schrader valve facing toward the rear of the truck. Usually if you open that while cranking the starter, it will bleed itself. I have never needed to crack an injector or pump line. After the trouble with water, I would suspect the water seperator has gone caput on you. It is a fairly common problem on those engines. Ford recommends pulling the drain plug on them at certain intervals(which hardly anybody ever does), but every time I've seen someone disturb the drain or have a known water problem the seperator had to be replaced. It's been a long time, but I think they run around $60 or so.

I have to say that we are a little disappointed that you need help with an International motor!! Ha! HA!

CHADS
Did you fill the filter with fuel before you installed it? Sometimes these fuel systems take awhile to get ALL the air out.Make sure you have all 8 lines loose at the injectors and crank the motor. If you spray wd-40 down the intake while you crank the engine it will crank faster and easier.Make sure the lift pump on the block is good, if these are bad you will have alot of trouble starting it after cleaning out the system like you did. Hope this helps!!!
Email me if you have any other questions as I work in a fuel injection shop.
Can get you a pump at a reasonable price if you need one.
Thanks
KEV

Yes, Filled it, and bled it to the injector pump, Loosened the lines up, cranked for about 5-8 minutes, (Not constantly) Nothing yet. Gonna try to pull it around to see if that speeds things up before removing the pump. Been told the shaft slides out, without removing the actual gear itself, (3bolts on the pump). When I bought the truck the fuel pump was out of it, replaced it, but did pull it around to get it going. may not have turned it over enough yet, Thanks, will check it over again, ChadS

diesel air in reply to ChadS, 10-02-2004 19:19:51
ChadS, On the older Chevys we had to open the bleeder and blow shop air through the filler neck on the fuel tank, that would bleed them right out and a lot cheaper than a new starter.
