I haven't been around many IH trucks so I know little about the earlier ones.Could someone tell me about these particular engines and what to look for when trying to locate one like what were they primarily installed in and maybe what kind of cubic inch they were? Thanks.

Red Diamond engines were produced from 1940-1975. Displacements were 361,372,401,406,450 and 501 cubic inches. They were installed in trucks as well as heavy equipment, such as road graders and rollers. If you are looking for an updraft manifold, try heavy equipment bone yards. Got my last one from a roller. Stationary powerplants were also updraft equipped. 501 blocks are different, they have no sleeves and higher camshaft location in the block.

In the 501,they lowerd the crankshaft about a 1/4 inch in the block and mains. The timing gears are a little bit larger. The 450 and smaller will bolt right into the McCormick-deering W-40 and use front timing cover and governor and oil filter.

There were 3 sizes of the Red Diamond IH gas engines.RD-406 had a 1bbl. carb, the RD 450 had a 2bbl.carb,and the RD 501 had a 4 bbl. carb easiest way to I.D. them.As someone posted they were in the IH Trucks of the 50s and 60s and early 70s pretty much all medium and large models.

The came in Semi's, or medium/hevy duty trucks, about 65 and back. The cubes were 450 or 501, and they are the most recognizable by the little valve cover, that just covers the top of the head, but has no sides. Other than that, you can't miss one. It's a 3 + foot long 2 ft high gas motor!

The RD Series Engines were installed primarily in the L190-L200 and later R190 and R200 series International Harvester "Corn Binder" Series of Heavy Trucks. They were in both Conventional and Cabover Models. They were used as Replacement Engines in KB6-KB8 older Series trucks. In 1957 a V-8 series was offered in the 190 and 200 Trucks and boy were they a Good performer as well as a good Looker. Some older "Emeryville Models were offered with "Red Diamond Packages" as well.IH had a engine Series In the early 60's called the "Black Diamond Series" and were installed in the A an B Series Trucks . An A or B 160 would be in the Grain Truck Catagory, while an A or B 170 or 180 would be a Light Semi Tractor Unit or a Heavy Straight Truck Type.A and B were basically the same except For the years difference and the A had single Headlights and the B had Dual headlights.Who remembers the Sightliner?? Now there was about the Thinnest Cab Over ever Designed, but in a solid frontal Impact the Driver never had a chance.I had a lot of differnt"Corn Binders" in my younger years, Had a L-110, two R-120's, one C-120, one A-185 Semi ,Single axle and my Pride a 1957 195 V-8. Did a lot of Hauling with those old Trucks. Also had a Mack B-61 Tandem, a Mack B-67 Tandem and a Kenworth K-100. Never got Rich but we had a lot of fun.John

Yes it was and as I remember they were equipped with 549 cu.in. V/8 engines at least the 3 that I was around and these three were all Tandem Drives. I don't remember any single axle's but there may have been some. In the days of 50 and 55 feet Max Over all Lenghth some were used especially when Wilson came out with the 45' livestock Trailers. When the Over all Lenghth was increased to 65' these Tractors diappeared.I have yet to see one that has ben saved from the Scrap yard.

Another note of interest: The Farmall 460 and 560 are basically a Truck engine. Any one know what Series Engine was used for the Tractor Design??

The 549 and 478 were very good engines, very popular in fire trucks as they were designed to use 2 distributors one in the front and one in the back.Good for emergency starts as you always had a back-up ignition.

TRKR I can see you are very knowledgeable on these IH Trucks. As no one has answered my Query on the 560 Tractor Engine source i will say that The 460 and 560 Engines are both Patterned on the IH Black Diamond 308 Engine. The first Diesel I ever Drove was for a Friend Hauling Hogs for ILL. Producers Livestick to Hormel Pack in Austin Minn.and it was a IH R200 Cabover Single Axle with a Cummins JT 175 and a Road Ranger 10 Speed. We really thought that was Top of the line until we saw our first Emeryville with a 220 Cummins and we couldn't drive that old Cab Over down to the Dealer Fast enough to get one of those New "Emeryvilles".John

Thank you,JC.Thought it was black diamond, wasnt there also a green diamond engine?I worked at a IH factory branch in Baltimore as a journeyman diesel mechanic back in the 60s,every truck owned by the city was IH gas powered, mostly red diamonds.I have forgotten more than I remember.

I'm not real sure what the K-Series,KB5-6-7-8 used for Engines.Maybe they called them Green Diamond's. I do Know that when I was a Kid all the Corn Shellers in our part of ILL. had KB6 for Grain Trucks. Joe Gretencord had two Shellers mounted on KB6'S. I can still hear them howling. Wonder why all the Sheller Operators had Straight Pipes on thier Engines?

What a coincidence. I worked for International Harvestor at Hickory Hills Farm at Norway ILL. from 9/'59 to 8/'68 when I left to go "Truckin". Hickory HiLLs was where all the Photos for IH advertising were taken and there also was an Industrial Equipment Training School for IH Sales operated there. I went to the Phoinix Az. Test track in '60 and drove the Preproduction 1600 to 1800 Loadstar Line for a Movie they Made for Sales. Drove with the Truck Rodeo Champions for 1960 and Had a Two Line Speaking Part in the Movie. Dave Garroway was the Narrator and MC of the show so that was a big deal. I basically hauled Experimental and Production Farm Equipment Into and out of The Farm where the Studio was located. Enough for now. E-mail me and we can talk some more.John
