JD G horsepower

I wanted to get an approximate horsepower rating for my 51 G. I'm currently using the original cyclone head w/ .045 aluminum pistons, but I've found a flathead I was thinking of purchasing. I've also got a cold manifold (the flat looking gas manifold) on it. Would this be a good setup or is there something else that could be done besides stroking that would help on hp?

Thanks,
1951G

I have G with .125 flat head port polished and big valves, carb opened up f1074 gas manifold port matched and a cam installed. I just put the cam in and dyno strong 75hp at rpm.I have to run race fuel for the comp increase.

I have a 51-G with .090 over aluminum high compression pistons and the flat head, gas manifold. It dynoes 68-70 hp, it spark knocks on anything but aviation gas/racing gas. The flat head gave me about 7-10 more HP.

we have a JD G with a flathead, .090 pistons, big nut carb, and a good port and polish job....65-70 horse..... ....used to run 70 all tyhe time.but head cracked from spark knock..... .so now its about 65-66 most of the time.....The advantage to getting a flat head is to boost the compression. if you could get a good set of pistons to boost u up to like say....9:1 compression ratio, then the swirl head would be better.....it has bigger ports and valves...and believe it or not, the swirling helps feed air/fuel and mix the air/fuel better..... .

A Puller,

Would a set of m & w .125 high compression pistons get the compression ratio up to 9:1? What if I shaved the cylone head down to the top of the eyebrows and used these pistons?

Thanks.

i doubt it. It takes more then a bigger piston to get up the compression. it has to be a tighter combustion chamber hense the dome piston. i wouldn't mill the head either..you can always change pistons, once a head is shaved alot, its always gonna be shaved alot. better go with the piston changing and a GOOD port and polish idea. i couldn't tell you where to get a good piston or what to use since i have not done one myself like this. We have plans for one, but still don't know about pistons, and it will be a stroker if we do it. contact wtw...a guy that goes by lynn, or buickanddeere...there very knowledgable guys.

You're right about the swirl head being better. It will produce more torque than the flat head will.
