A clevis. That's if you are only pulling for fun... :-)

Seriously, a B is not an easy tractor, nor a cheap tractor, to build for competition. A friend of mine has one that does really well at 3250 and 3500, but he starts to run short in 4000. And he has done lots of work, and spent more than a couple bucks on, the little B. Too many tractors bigger than the little B when you get that heavy that are able to balance well.

WTW posts on here quite a bit, and he has a couple of B's that are pretty tough. Seen em Sigourney, and for B's they are wicked.

i never saw a John Deere B pull anything successfully except a hay wagon. and then when its loaded, they wont climb anything without gearing down, even on pavement. Never hooked one to a sled. But have run them a ton, all over the place, lots of them, most everyone has one hooked to a haywagon. its about all they are good for.
but hey its your tractor, and i bet you enjoy it as much as anyone else here does theirs. who knows, right traction conditions the day may be yours.

Bruce, It sounds like from the other responses, the first thing you need is a big ego. I usually pull Cases and do quite well. But I have a 47 JD B. I don't pull it with the light weights though. It takes home the gold in the 5500lb class. Most people don't think a JD B has much hope in this class- until they see it pull. At this weight it is perfectly matched with its mostly stock engine and 15.5 tires. Just grab a clevis and "come on down".

Well the first thing you should do is sell it and buy an Oliver. Even with stock tractors the Olivers are always placing ahead of me with my ol B. Even if you just want to have fun I would definatly go with an Oliver. The only advantage I see is being able to slowly ease in that hand clutch that can help you more than anything you can do to the motor.

First get a set of rules for where your going to be pulling. Then raise your draw bar to 18" to 20" as allowed. The closer the hitch point (inside of clevis) is to the centerline of the axle (18" or 20" seems to be the going rules) the tractor will pull the front up less until you get used to carrying the front wheels and steering with the rear brakes. Gear choices, 1st or 2nd depending on how hard or soft the track is. Most everyone at the pulls will help you as much as they can. Don't forget your weights if you can available

P.S.

BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN, and think LITE WEIGHT for a JD 'B'

should have used red, flambeau red that is, j/k.... glad to see your interest in this. all you need now is a clevis, but once you hook it, once is never enough... then build it just a little, then a little more, and a little more, and a little more. i would reccomend wheelie bars if you have no way of mounting front weights. BE SAFE and have funn.
