I think it says "Power Block" in raised letters on top of the block.

They're bad to get ground off...is so there will be a smooth spot where they were on the top, back of the block.

All power blocks came with the words Power Block and also the bore size and # of the serial number break it fit cast in raised letters on the top of the block, between the upper water pipe and the back of the block where it bolts to the case. However, if these letters have been ground off, and you are unable to determine if it is a power block, there are a couple of other ways. First and foremost, power blocks didn't come with any petcocks, both on the sides or bottom. While they can be tapped on the bottom of each sleeve, through the head studs for petcocks, the casting on a stock block is different for the petcocks. Also, devout JD guys can pick them out by subtle differences in shapes and coutours of the casting, and differences in spark plug angles.
Another way to tell, and the easiest, is only done with the head off. A power block is a larger than stock bore, with a compression ring at the top that remains stock bore.
