had a friend in kansas that was dq in div 2 on tires these were road cut tires no grinding just road cut . would this be leagal or not

personally I think top cuts would be okay in div 2 but not any cut in all classes. top cuts with minimum height of lug would be a good equalizer. good roadworn tires of the sizes used are hard to find anymore and anyone with a pair is at a distinct advantage. fairly affordable to top cut also. any cuts get spendy. Paul

Our little club here in Mi. used to deal with the same problems until we implemented a new tire rule. Our rule states that there is "No restriction on the top of the lug, but there must be a distinguishing line on the back of the lug(in other words you can not grind down so far as to make a double cut), and casing inbetween lugs can not be altered." We have almost had fist fights in the past, and we were down to an average of about only 50 or 60 hooks per pull. After the implementation of this new rule about 6 or 7 years ago, we have had no altercations and our number of hooks now averages about 150 to 170, sometimes well over 200. We tried to get this tire rule to pass a couple of years ago with the N.A.T.P.A., but there were slightly more people running sprayer and "road worn" tires than we anticipated, so it was voted down by a small margin. Rather than continue to pull Div.2 against all the sharp tires, we just jumped up to Div.3. There are no arguements there. We would like to pull Div.2 again, but the playing field would have to be changed for that to happen. By the way, ask the guys with the sharp road worn tires just how much acetelyne they went through in their torches to get their tires to look that way, and watch their expression. See if they can lie with a strait face! Marty

I think the only people dirtier than stock car racers are antique tractor pullers. Every time you make a rule someone has to bend it or break it. For example, I used to pull in a 1st gear class - no speed limit, just 1st gear, any cut on tires. So what would people do? Buy faster gears so that they could go 5-8 mph in 1st gear. This nonsense of cutting a tire, torching it and then claiming it to be road worn is nonsense.

Bottom line, the more rules you have the harder it is to enforce. Where I am at now, they allow top cuts but not fronts and it drives me crazy.

Dad works at a ag supply/grain elevator business. I could probably come up with some used sprayer tires and have them at the April NATPA pull in Columbia.

I've got a set of Armstrong 12.4x38's that came off of a Row-Gator on my MM R. They do work very well.

Not very smart in this area !What do you mean about (how much acetelyne) used form the torch ?
ARE people cutting the tops of tires, and then heating them back up with a torch, to make the rubber hard again !
I have not experienced all the tricks people may be using, or would jump thru hoops to do, for a win !
how do you tell if the top of a tire has been bac-cut or shaved !

You grind the top of the lug to the angle that you want then you use a rosebud and literally catch the top of the lug on fire then brush out the fire AND the grinder marks with a good thick leather glove. No grinder marks, no cut tire. Marty

In the past as long as the tires were road worn they were o.k., but the way they are checking tractors this year I really do not know what to tell you! Personally I feel that their is only two ways to be fair with this div.2 tire business one way is everyone must run new tires, or let the pullers cut them, what difference would it make if all the other rules in div.2 are inforced,seems to me it would stop a lot of hard feelings. just my 2 cents.

I am sorry to hear about your friend, this kind of stuff is starting to really affect the pulling numbers at the napta pulls, I really feel sorry for the promoters,I just wonder how long this will continue before they drop napta pulls? I assume your friend was from Ks. is he went through the expense to go to Lincoln just to be D,Q. for tires that is a crying shame, I would have pulled div.3. Again as a member of napta I am sorry.
