I'm 16 years old and I have a 1949 Oliver 88. I have taken many parts off of it. All that is left is the engine sitting on the frame. I plan on having it sandblasted and repainted. I'm wanting to turn it into a pulling tractor but I need help on what to do with the engine such as boring it out or stroking it. Any general help on making my tractor a good puller would be appreciated.

Thanks, Eric Kramer

Eric, I'm not sure how much you are planning to spend. At the very least I would try to find a set of 3 7/8 M+W domed pistons. Or even better would be a set of 4 1/4 or 4 3/8 aluminum chevy pistons from Wisco. I wouldn't go larger than that as it becomes difficult to hold the sleeves. Get as much porting and polishing done on the head as possible, a set of larger valves would be nice but that runs up the bill fast. Open up the intake manifold as much as you can and a 1650 exhaust manifold works well. Let Motec do your carb over. A cam from a 1650 or 1750 livens up an 88 motor too. Unless you really want to spend some bucks I wouldn't do any stroking on the crank. With a good job on the head, the M+W pistons, a Motec carb you will see 75 to 80hp. At this it should pull really well and still be useable in the field although it will be really tough on gas.

I pull one but mine is a 1948. I have pulled my tractor for three years now and am doing really good. But I have done nothing but over hauled the engine. Every thing is stock. I just put Super 88 Decals on it for intemidation.(They sent me the wrong set) Well I guess thats my two cents. Good luck with the tractor. D dude

I've noticed that most real good strong Olivers don't stay together very well. Look at Bill Bears 880 went through three 20,000 motors last year alone. But there are some real competitive 88's pulling the stock & plus classes around MI. Thanks
