I've got an IH 826 with the german diesil in it sitting in the back 40, Sure is catching my eye out there these days. Also have a 856 with the 407DT that Dad used on the farm, Good workhorse in my opinion,,, But as you know, I have a tractor, I have to make a puller out of it. If theres a will, there's a way! Been thinking of a bigger pulling tractor alot, around here, there is some sort of tractor pulling going on, that allows these years of tractors, and the rules are kinda, shall we say, laxed,, Ive seen old NTPA super stocks pulling locally for a few years now, and thats my dream, to run one of those big dogs down the track someday. Im not really considering the 856 as a puller, since over the years, put alot of repairs on it and kept it up to snuff. That 407 is quite an engine in that tractor, and years of good service with it, sure seems, I dont know, wrong to strip it down to be a puller. So now its that 826 with bout 9 inches of snow on it out in a snow drift. Story when this tractor found its way here is, The farmer that I got it from, bought it new, used it on the dairy farm, with a loader, I imagine it has seen a few hours on a silage chopper or what have you. One day, it quit running on him, and he bought a newer machine to replace it, sat in the shed for a long while. Id seen it on a delivery while I was still driving truck, and stopped in and asked. He was happy to talk about that 826, and was eager to make some space in his shop. Couple of phone calls, and I was the owner of that IH 826. Couldn't pass it up, ya know,, LOL. Thats was 5 years ago, so it has been out back ever since. Kinda used it as a parts tractor for the 856, few odds and ends there, but nothing major. I remember hearing it run for about 30 seconds before I parked it there, but it ran so roughly and it would not restart. The farmer said it had a knock in it, 30 seconds before it quit running, I used either to start it, and well, never really determined what was going on with it. Heard something pecking, but thought it may have been the starting fluid. It has a 358 in it. Never heard of a turbo set up for them, Was there one? Anyways, Like I said, I am looking at it to make a good 7500-10,000 farm, "hot" stock type classes. Has anyone ever seen a german diesil hopped up in an 826? Can they live, or should I leave it in the back 40,,,,, ChadS

For the weight class you want to run, German wont do it, not enough room for cubes. No parts available for them either as far as "GO" parts are concerned. You would be much much farther ahead to go with the 407 in it.

the 407 is the way to go. you can make some fun power with it in the right class.

The 826 is a very good "Farm" tractor, but not much on the "puller" side. The factory pump just won"t give enough fuel to make anything happen. We made a kit and put a inline pump on one, got the fuel to it then,(It was also turbo charged) but the head bolts won"t take it. There aren"t enough of them. Plus that motor doesn"t have any bottom end torque like the 407. Been there, done that, still disappointed.

From what I understand, the 407 is kinda hard to come by, (to buy a good one, or rebuild one) Wonder how a RD 501 would look like in it? alcohol, turbo charged, Hmmm,,, ChadS

the 407 can be found. hi performance parts are hard to get unless you make them yourself. not like a 400 series. in our club there is a cube and age limit that makes the 407 the only ih choice

We have a 361 out to 540 CI. Been together for about 5 years with maybe 15-20 runs/year. Hard blocked 4 5/8" piston with whatever stroke makes it come up to 540 (forget). Cat pistons and leyland rods, 3lm turbo wastgated to 15psi all under an M hood(lengthened 6"). Working on a clutch that will hold now - been slipping a lot at 8500 lbs in 4th gear. Boatloads of torque for pace classes - pulled 2nd gear in 14,000 3mph pace class last year. Probably won't do that again, but it was fun to try.

Engine started out as d361 out of an 806. M hood (+6"), m rear .... sort of. Super M gears with industrial ring and pinion for more speed - didn't want to use M&W. Nother guy in the area has an M with a DT466 under the hood very similar to ours, but doesn't have near the low end that we do. He tried M&W and they would bend a little at first instead of snap like IH gears do. We both have a 4th gear lock-in as we went through several sets of 4ths due to popping out 3/4 down the track. The 560 with 466 gas conversion is also in our area, as is a case 400 and a case 730 w/504's turboed under the hood and we all get down to 5500. Also an m with a red diamond?? industrial gas motor that puts a stomping on us all when he can get it to the track. Also a good runing minnie GVI around. Clarence wentzler and his cases are also in the neighborhood - lots of competion if everyone shows up, but usually we get the turbos and non-turbos split up.

I don't know how serious you are chad, but I have a bunch of 407 parts I will be selling in the next month or so. Got a few blocks, one is punched out to 466ci, set of solid pushrods, hypermax injectors, roosa and bosch pumps with lines, cranks, rods, cams, to6 and a to8 chargers, lowered IH wide front, etc etc, and a bunch more stuff.
