I need advice building a JD B. I have a power block with a 6" stroked crank. The tractor is a 1947 or 1948 model. I have a hisler knuckle head. I am told it will fit by stretching two bolt holes, but have also been told the gasket will not hold. I am looking for any information regarding rod length, cams, pistons, and anything else that would be helpful.

Buckshot, If I knew what piston you were going to use, I could figure rod lengths for you. If the piston is something that I am not familiar with I would need to measure it to calculate the rod length. The knuckle Heisler head that was used on a 39 or 40 model B will have the two center studs to close to the cylinder bore for it to fit on top of the Power-block that you have. There is a possibility that the holes can be move outward in the head to make it slide on over the block stud pattern. If you use a later head gasket intended for the block I would think it could be made work. The compression that you will gain using this early style Heisler head will be in great need as the replacement oversize piston you chose to use will need all the help you can get to achieve a decent compression ratio. The down side to the early Heisler head is they have very small valves in them. That is where the later Heisler head would be much better. I am sure you can have the intake valves altered and oversized but it will never be close to what you could get from a later Heisler head. At stock rpm's it may not be as big as an issue and still perform fairly well. A piston that I have used in the past is a 478 GMC gas V6 truck engine piston, it will need to be altered on top on a lathe to achieve the correct compression and rod length. If you were to use this piston in the Power-Block with a 6" stroke, the rod length would have to be 11.5 inches long (center to center). As far as cams go you have the best one in the tractor right now for what you are wanting to do. If you can give me some more information on what parts you are going to use for sure I will try and help some more. Good Luck, DW
