I have a 1967 JD 5020 rowcrop (38 inch almost new rice and cane tyres)with turbo which I hope to take tractor pulling during the summer. Competition will come from MM1000, Cockshutt V8 Massey V8 and modern 4x4 models from Ford,JD and International. Should I stay at home and not be embarrassed and waste my time or do I have a chance against these. Any advice on gearing to use etc would be very welcome.
Thanks for now.

The rice and cane tires will have to come off. They are totally worthless for pulling.Get some road worn 20.8x 38 straight bar Firestones with 30-40% tread.Get the drawbar in closer and as high as the rules allow and balance the tractor from there.

Years ago the 5010-5020 JD's used to do decent here in the 15,000 lb class.I believe they mostly pulled 3rd gear but none were running turbos.Try and pull the lightest class you can and weigh the limit.

I"m in the same boat. Just got a 6030. Not gonna do any engine work to it this year aside from turning up fuel and a few rpms. Just take it out and see what it can do and hope it doesn"t take a crap in it"s pants. Chris did you rebuild your motor before you went out this last summer?

Hi, my advice to you would be to get that 5020 on the track and show them what it will do ! I took my 6030 to the local pull here in England and I was laughed at by certain John Deere owners who brought along there nice new models 6810, 6920 6400 etc because I was running a 30 year old two wheel drive tractor with no powershift. I have no wheel weights fitted and have no water ballasting in the tyres, the engine is not modified apart from the fuel turned up a bit. When my turn came I chose 5 th gear and let it go. Now I had never been pulling before and was happy not to come last but was even more happy to beat those new JDs with powershift and 4wd. Good luck
Chris.

dang you still got that big ol tractor!!! I figured the first time you had to fill the tank you would have gooten so scared it would be gone! LOL!! Seriously though, how ya been doing? I finally got the tractor I have ben wanting for almost 35 yrs. 1962 Oliver 1800 diesel. I'll have to email you a picture of it.

It doesn't have nearly the HP your does but it sure runs good. We are going to have an non-turbo class this year a my local show and pull and I am going to take it and the 1800 LPG and see what they will do. The diesel is light as compared so it might not do great but who cares, I'll get to hear i under a load!!!

I would start looking for an evenly worn set of regular tread tires about 40-50% tread. Road worn with a sharp front edge and some layback from the front edge to the back edge on the face of the bar. Rice and Cane tires do not usually do very well on a pulling track. The extremely tall lug folds over and loses traction. Even a regular tread tire with new lugs does the same thing to a lesser extent.

Good Luck
