I have a 1952 JD A and there is a engine for sale that is bored out .125 and was wondering if i could still run in stock classes. It has the original block. Thanks for any info.

Do what you want, as long as you don't tell anyone, noone will notice. Unless you do other things to your tractor, you still wont be able to pull 2nd gear unless the track is loose, so noone will notice that you have ever so slightly more cid, as you go putting by at 1.75 MPH.

I pulled late A's and B's for 8 years and was required to pull in low gear. I never powered out on either tractor with just stock engines. We had strict rules on tire size, tire pressure, etc. The 125 over will not do you any good if you are required to pull in creeper gear, and I don't think you can handle 2nd with just adding the new head. If anything a little more HP will only make him spin out faster Unless he pulls up into something like a 9,000 pound class he doesn't need anymore for the creeper gear. I wish I had a 51 or 52 A. Greg H.

My 51 "A" is bored .125 over and I frequently pull in 2nd gear with 15.5x38s on the back without powering out in the 5,500 lb class. 6,500 lb class I always pull 1st gear. This year I'm pulling with 14.9x38s so I don't know if it'll make a difference but I should have a little more ground speed. I'm still looking for that little edge to give me an extra 5' or so on my pull.

Steve, are you going to Sigourney? I hope to be there with at least a tractor, and probably some cut tires to sell. I am hoping to make it. Mike

Hi Mike, yeah I'll be there if we don't have a snow storm even though I know I'll be overmatched. I think a few guys from my pulling club, MATPA, will be going too so as long as I know a few guys to B.S. with it doesn't matter how I finish. Are you going to take the "60"? are you working on a "70" now?

Steve

Hey Rman I'm kinda curious since when is a original JD flathead not a factory part I run one on a 1950 G and nobody seems to have a problem with it.

Maybe they just havent said anything. I have not seen a flat head part number for a 1950 G in any parts book. Sure they were on the unstyled, but not a styled G. I am not saying it is not an original part, just was never on that tractor.

Yes you could still pull in stock classes. Just using an oversize piston. You get out of stock when you go to stroking the crank and putting on flat heads and altering the engine from factory parts.

just wanted to add my two cents I have pulled a 51 a for 5 yrs now and first 3 pulled it being 45 over with ct farm and family aluminum pistons got 38 hp outa it with 71 carb stock had armstrong 13.6 x38 which actually measure taller than my dad's firestone 14.9x 38 tires did well with it never killed it in second gear have a friend that has 125 over alum m&w's and gets 44 hp at and has never killed his till he put 14.9's on it. So I really think it depends on tire size first and second what you really get outa her and third a 52 a first gear is 1.25 and second 2.25 read owners manual. Last but not least look into lengething the rods to get compression up to 9.0 or 9.5 to one cost about 300 to do and have seen with stock boar an a get 46 outa that setup with cast pistons standard boar and second is never a question have seen third once outa it . I know lengthening the rods and 125 over will be even better so check around before you spend big bucks to get the most for your money
