I have a JD 4020, that I use to farm and oacasionally pull with. It is currently running around 120 HP, and I was wondering if any of you had suggestions of a filter to run. I was thinking of modifying the origional canister to fit in a K&N. Only thing is I want to have one setup to use all the time, will the K&N hold up? Or do you ahve any other suggestions? Thanks for your help!

More useful Info. in reply to 4020 farmer, 02-27-2005 20:23:09
I forgot that the filter I currently have is the oil bath type with the precleaner stack. I really want to keep the air stack for looks. JD did make a dry filter to use with the air stack, but I have never seen one or been able to find one. I guess they were kinda rare, and thus I would guess they might be a bit pricey.

Also, the K&N I am looking at is they type that would clamp onto the end of a pipe. The flange is 3 inces around. The filter is cone shaped, and measures 9 inches long, 6 inches around on one end and 4.5 inches around on the other.

Would this new info change any of your suggestions al all?

Well, if you are trying to talk yourself into it the K&N filter go ahead but I would only use when pulling. There is no better filtering than a good oil bath system. Why don't you rig something up to change over when pulling than back to stock for farming? Sounds to me like you use this machine for farming more than pulling so...

I would not suggest a K&N style filter on a Farm Tractor. For a strictly pulling engine they are okay, that is what I have, but for farm use and with the amount of air that that engine will pull through I think you would "dust" it in a manner of time. There have been extensive studies done on different types of air filters and the K&N does let the most air through but there is a compromise, along with all that air dirt particles get through. You will be better off leaving well enough alone and keep a clean paper filter in the stock canister. My $.02.

If you do decide to go with a K&N style in your application, get the outer filtering sleeve. Follow cleaning instructions and watch how you clean and maintain it. Hold it up to the light and check for pinholes after cleaning, you will be surprised what you find. Be careful when oiling also, to much is not good and not enough is worse.

Good luck!

I would think the K&N would hold up because they are on ATVs, cars, pulling tractors, and more. You would just have to make sure you buy the K&N Recharging kit and clean it.

Don"t use a K&N on a farm tractor. 1. they don"t make one big enough to handle the air volume that you will usefarming all day long in the dusty conditions. You may find one big enough for the cubic inches but it will plug very quickly. 2.Studies are proving that K&N filters are not all that they are cracked up to be. Performance diesel trucks are going to AFE filters.

I had a K&N set up on my "99 powerstroke. It seamed to get dirty quickly and my mileage was never as good. I could max out at 28 psi boost. I switched to Fords new extreme duty air box and filter. The filter is a dry media that the military is using on their tanks over in the desert. First run I hit 32 psi boost and it still hits it after 4 months use.
