I have been told that you can put a chevy piston (or other brand)in a 77 Oliver without changing the rods, may have to rebushing the piston pin. Is there any truth behind this? I know these old tractors can not take a lot of compression being stock, but they surley can take a little more than they have. Wanting to pull Div. II and III, do not want a Div V tractor. Thanks in advance for your help.

The old Chevy 216 inline six has the same bore as the 77. The wrist pin is the biggest problem you have to overcome. The 77 is 1.0625 (if I remember correctly) and the Chevy is closer to .750

Actually Bountyhunter, compression is one area of these engines that is most on need of improvement. And with the way bearings were sized (for durability), they can take HUGE compression increases and show no signs of reduced longevity. Of course to achieve HUGE compression increases, it will require major engine modifications in which you do not seem interested.

Sorry that I cannot provide you with the answer regarding the 77 piston info. I am confident that the rod will require re-bushing in almost every case...
