I sat down and made some phone calls today, to locate a set of IH C-301 LP high alt pistons for Something Wilder'engine. No longer available is what I heard 5 different times in all my usual places. So, I decided to go with the firecraters used in the C-301 and recut them to what I need. The old ones, were like a flat top, with a slight dome on them, Dad had made this set a long time ago, and well, they just got old. Made em out of a rare piston style, and I cant find em. The bore in this block is slightly smaller than what I was running, Now back to running on the bare block, and no, no aftermarket sleeves used in this one. I dont want it to leak water in the oil, and pressed in sleeves not done right, is a recipe for a milkshake in the oil pan. There is a small bit of room to use aftermarket sleeves, but with this stroke, and using stock H rods, its stressful on the sleeve and shakes it loose, even hard blocked in. The cyl walls now are over .130 thick, and will be hard blocked 1/2 way up the water pan on the side of the engine, I cut an old rusty water cover in half to do this, I pick up the hard block in the morning. One guy told me to set the block on top of a concrete vibrator to shake the block filler even deeper in to the crevices, Im thinking bout it if I can do it.... I did do some grinding on the block today, and made the crankshaft swing in the block, wasnt much, I did take out much less this time round to clear it, there is around .075 between the crank and the block for the tightest area to pass by. Im also thinking of ways to relive stress on the sidewall of the block bores created by the piston, and the stock rod, at the moment, the wrist pin is dead center of the rod bore, I may move it down a bit more to try to relive the pressure, it may help rotate easier and make for easier starting. The old 270 was a bear to turn over, once it fired up, it ran great!! Just trying to make it live, and not be such a pain in the you know what to run it at the tracks. Another problem in the old 270 was oil pressure. The crank when stroked, on #2 and 3 rod journals went throughand shows a tiny hole on the opposite side of the oil passage on the journal. It carried 30 psi and less sometimes,,, Im not too sure on what to do about this,, Ive ran em like that before,, and the bearings looked ok,, The oil gallery is another problem area that leaked from going through it, and brazing it back shut, and pin holes show up, leaking oil back into the crankcase. Im thinking of cutting the gallery open, then shoving some sort of tube inside the gallery, and either JB weld it in place, or,,, well, Im not sure what will hold it at the moment.,,,, LOL.. Ill find something,,, Bubble gum Dad recommneds,,,,, LMAO!!! I did try to repair a leaking sleeve with JB weld last year,,, it did not seem to stick,,,, once the oil got on it and warm. Peeled right off when I double checked it the next day. So, maybe that wont do the job,,,,, Tommorrw, I start clearancing for the rods to clear the block, it wont take to long to do, just have to watch the bottom of the bore to not go thru the water jacket. I thinking ahead about a head gasket,,, Ive used copper in the past due to the larger bore, but now, Im back in the area, where a 350 head gasket fits pretty good around the block bore. But,, can it hold 280+psi of compression? I know it can hold 245,,, but, Im going higher,, even with flat top pistons, in can be as high as 270 and up,,, Well, beer is empty, and supper is done, so Im outa here for a while!!! I cant wait to hear Ol Something Wilder run again! ChadS

I used steel tubing, So I can braze it in and stick. Is your H torn down? Seen an earlier post where your waiting for the crank,, just wondering what was up,,, Not trying to be nosey! LOL!!! I got #1 turning over really well, took about 3 hrs, but I did not cut as much out of the block as I thought I would. Its looking very good. Im exited to hear it run,, maybe next week, or the week after next, but,, Im not sure,, I may try some suggestions given in a earlier post. Chad
