How Much Torque Will a 9 Handle?

I've got a line on where i might pick up an IH 9-series tractor [not sure if it's an I-9 or a W-9] for maybe a low price. Hasn't run in years. I'm thinking about adapting an IH V8 truck motor for some possible fun pulling, and maybe a little heavy-duty bush hogging from time to time.

Does anyone know how much torque the 9-series transmission and rear end will handle? If it's one level, I'm thinking a 345...if it's higher, maybe a 7.3 smoker...or if I can get one built cheap enough, maybe even a V-549 behemoth, just for sh#ts and grins, and to watch the looks on people's faces.

Anybody ever BTDT?

BTDT. I currently have an I-9 with a 396 and turbo 350 in it that I built for kicks. Yes, the W9 rear will hold because the original engine had about 450 ft/# of torque, you're just turning more rpms. I've got about 400 to 450 HP turning up about 6500. It's a blast to drive with the automatic on acceleration, but it's kinda like Mr. Toads' wild ride on the way back down. It pulls straight and true because of the weight and balance. It weighs about 7500 w/o driver. I painted it black with red flames. I can also shoot flames thru the headers straight up at idle about eight feet. I won't be back at my computer for a few days, but if you want to talk about the details just call me any night @ 985-735-0022, and I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Better check your math. The W-9 on gasoline produced 49.40 horsepower at 1500 rpm. That's 175 lb.-ft. of torque at rated RPM, nowhere near 450 lb.-ft. Using the standard horsepower formula, a W-9 producing 450 lb.-ft. at 1500 rpm would make around 128 horsepower. That's not to say the rear-ends aren't stout, however. But when you're spinning the tires, the amount of torque the powertrain components "feel" is less than what they may experience in a hard pull hooked solid to the ground.

Until they get a bite of that solid ground! LOL!!

Not even the John Deere 830 put out 450 lb-ft of torque. I believe that max torque on them was about 400 when lugged down below rated rpm. Before 1960, that was probably the highest torque tractor engine because of the hp produced at low rpm.

Yep. The 820/830 had around 340 lb.-ft. at 1125 rpm in order to produce its 72+ horsepower.

I remember 25-30 years ago a superstock puller in these parts had an old I-9 with 2 426 Hemis on it. Had it dressed up like an M with tricycle frontend. It was a monster. I'm sure it was putting well over 1000 hp through the trans and rearend and I never heard of any problems.

I run a twin engine modified with Dodge 440's crank to cranks and the tractor has a W-9 rear. The gears in the trans are the weak link, Our rear has custom made gears in the trans everything else is stock.

Your talking about Nobel Henshaw? He had some issues he told me one time he had several spare rears at his place if I ever needed parts, I think it was pretty reliable considering what he was cramming to it!

Yep somebody told me after I posted that he did have some gears made for it later that would stand the pressure. I'd like to have one of those engines now...
