Yesterday, The little lady and I went to Westville Indiana for a pull, got rained out as soon as my class began. So, loaded up, and headed home. A rapidly approcahing storm was on its way to make the ride home an intersting one for sure! I decide I would drive around the front of the storm, and headed east instead of south, which would have put us right into the heart of it if i went south. So, I ran US 6 east to US 31 South. Good plan??? well, maybe,,, made it to 31 fine, till we started heading south back to Rochester on US 31. Wasnt raining just yet, was crsing right along, until all of a sudden,, all heck broke loose!! We were approcahing the intersection of US 31, and US 30 just east of plymouth, where we had ran right into what looked like 2 tornadoes, heading right for us!!!! Cars were stopping, turning back north, running away from what we were staring down. It was moving very slowly, the first "so called twister crossed 31 and was headed north east, and the second was heading right for us!! We were scared off out you know what's!!!! LOL!! There was no where to go, but straight for it. From what i had seen, it was still on the west side of the highway, and the first one had already crossed 31, so I took off to dodge between the two, before it crossd the road. 4 other cars were right on my rear bumper, we headed south!!! we did clear the second system, before it crossed the road, soon, we seen a bunch of stopped cars along the hiway, and people was geting out of their cars, and staring to the north east. We pulled over, wondering why they were looking there,, and we seen what appeared to be a tornado "roping out" and was travelling across the field. Bout that time we was looking, a sheer wind caught our car, and it looked like the rain was flying horizontal so everyone took off like mad, we did the same, trees, all sorts of junk flying around in the road. We hit the worst rain storm I had ever seen in this area in quite a while once we cleared the heart of this storm. The old T-bird I got,, got a well deserved car wash courtacy of Mother Nature. I dont know if the twisters we seen were confirmed to be tornadoes, but from what we seen, Id say we witnessed two of em!! Judy and I thanked the man upstairs for allowing us to see that upclose, and making it out with out a scratch. I dont recommend doing what I had did to anyone. I went on a gut feeling that somehow we would make it. Guess 7+ years of driving truck paid off, cause we drove right through the heart of it! Last time I drove through a storm like that was out in Oklahoma and seen a twister from 2 miles away, that time I parked the truck, and watched it then,,, Gotta do what ya gotta do ya know!!! We got home, and cleaned out our britches, and we lived to tell the tale! WHEW!!!! What a day at the tractor pull!!! Dont try that at home!!! Chad N Judy,,, tractor pullers turned storm chasers???? I got caught up in a hail storm back in 1985 just south of MemphisTN that broke the glass in the car I was in.There was a tornado near by but it was hailing soo hard we couldn't have seen it coming if it was coming right at us.We was in a brand new 1986 Cutlass Ciera that was totally ruint, hood ,decklid, roof, windshield, back glass.

Ouch. We was dodgin tree limbs, Where we was passing through, it was a wooded area, lots of trees close to the road side. Winds came through there and the trees went flying!! Along 31, where we met up wit the storm, it has a long progressive curve that takes you up to the overpass of US 30. along the curve, its lined with trees, small woods, but trees bout all the way round the curve. All we was seeing, was the wind, and the debris,,, till we came around the curve past the tree lines,,,,, ,,,, BRAKE LIGHTS, Cars in the median, turning around, and those two "wanna be twisters" heading our way. the first just crossed 31, and the second was on its way. Overpass to cross, and we drove, with what time we had to git away, only way, was to drive inbetween em. everyone else,, behind us, the traffic backed up from 31 traffic coming to a stop. All I could think was drive. My t-bird is a 88 model, has 5.0, and she runs good. Posi rear end, and good tires. So off we went shooting across that overpass wit that thing coming, the wind hit the car, WHAM! It was like a truck driving in the side, car kinda went sideways, it straightend out, and we were gone!! I know it was rainin hard, but the speedometer was bout 55-60, in blinding rain. We got across, bout that time it crossed behind us. Mile or two up the road, cars were stopped, and people geting out, pointing ot the northeast, so we stopped too,,, rain let up, for a few split moments, seen what everyone was looking at, and then the wind and rain hit again. So we drove bout 25 miles to the south, and round Rochester, it was just sprinking, and the sun was out, but the back part of it was still building up. Just did not get hit that hard in that area, as what further north got. That was bout in DCToms back yard where the worst went through. Glad he did stop at the truck stop, cause man,, what a ride! Sorry for the long story,,, I know Im a redneck,, aint been on tv more than 5 times describing what the tornado sounded like, but still, dont see that everyday! do we? ChadS

That sounds familiar. Glad to hear you made it through ok. My wife and I made a trip from Tennessee to Iowa last Spring to pickup a plow and planter for our antique tractors. Between Peosta and Dunkerton, we got in the middle of several storm cells. The radio was giving details of where they were touching down and she had the road atlas to see where they were in relation to us. I remember the sky turned green and rain was coming down in sheets so hard that you couldn't see the road. Also, I remember while we were were sitting in the truck under a bridge her asking the question, "Let me make sure I understand this. We're sitting in the middle of several tornadoes touching down around us for a rusty old plow and planter." I said that pretty much sums it up. It was a memorable moment, but not one that I'd like to repeat.
