I thought I ve seen it all after yesterday. A 300 came in the shop for repair, it had a bad trouble of fouling the plugs. It is a one owner machine, and reports that it has always done that since it was new. OK! I ll have a look at it,,, Tore into it,, made sure the ign was good, the symptom was that it would smoke real bad at idle, and foul plugs. HMM,, why does it do that? All the adjustments made a difference, I could stop it from smoking, but would be so lean wouldnt run correctly. SO, I removed the carb from the manifold, Well now!! Whats this??? I found that sometime, someone had drilled a small hole into the throttle butterfly. When the throttle was closed, it was running off the idle circuit fine, but, could still draw fuel up the venturi from the metering stem, through that little hole, making it so rich, it burns your eyes out! Now, I had replaced the butterfly, and its back to normal,, but it had me thinking,,, when I ran methanol,,, I had always had trouble with them idleing,, could not get enough through the idle circuit, thinking about that 300 carb, made me wonder if that was a home remedy to by pass the idle circuit all together at one point and time. I bet that would work! Im thinking it was sabotage why this carb was messed up. But gave me an idea??? Chad
