Was wondering how good these cranks are . I havnt really heard anything bad about them. I talked to Todd (I think thats what his name was) said he could have me a JD crank in about a month or so. Is he pretty good on his time schedual or will it take a Merfeld year? One more question. These alluminum billet rods worth the cash or not? and how much for a set. I know that was 2 questions. thanx Tyler

Tyler, I just installed a crank from Todd in my 70. Todd does very good work and is a pleasure to work with. If he tells you something you can take it to the bank. Good quality work and will be done when he says it will, barring unforeseen consequences which we all deal with from time to time. I would not hesitate to recommend Todd and Earl to anyone. And unless you go with billet rods even 9 1/2" is a lot to "throw" in a 70. Mike

Todd told me 10in is to big and that most likely it would break. Not enough original crank left to hold. I have decided to fix the 70 And I think Im gonna stick with my original thought of 9.5 on the stroke. Have either one of you seen one of his cranks? Why should I skip the billet rods?

I wouldnt skip the billet rods all together, its just that you want steel ones and not aluminum.

Re: Tyler, Tyler,,, in reply to Tyler Neff, 06-20-2005 07:08:15
Well, as far as I know about this 10" G its the second crank in 3 years. I think TNT is a good place, I spoke with him long time ago bout an IH crank, seemed confident that he can do them, but that was an IH,, not a JD. No, have not seen his work. There was a 70 gas that pulled in NIATPA for years, passed around, then sold, havent seen it since, at one time, that 70, and Meck's G would be whooping on the Molines, and not just barely by an inch, but like 10 - 12 ft!! I bet you have seen it at one time or another, it was from Nappanee, IN, That ol 70 had pulled as long as I could remember, was a reliable, yet, very very powerful JD. No, I dont think it was as strong as Meck's 48 G, but it always ran good. When that 70 sold, The ad in the hook said 90hp. Now you know what, I think it can be done, and live, go wake up Darrel Meck, and put your heads together and build a bad JD. (Then come pull it in NIATPA and show these Molines how to git r done! IH aint doing it. Only tractor that ive ever known to out do a moline was a deere. Now, Im kinda sorry that Im writing all this out, But Im kinda depressed here,, All I see round the heavy mods round here, is a Yeller one. ( DC tom, youll pick right up on that one! LMAO) You once said, you knew Meck's G, and even had one like it, Well, in IN, If there was a JD that can git r done, it would be that one. Id pay $$ to see that showdown. Neff, If billet does it, and you know it will,, then do it, if it dont and you know it, dont, Me, I dont, but I think you know how to make these JD's run, and know people round that do too. There are some good folk around Roann Indiana that know too bout em. But, they cant hold much water,, ya know what I mean,, but always stayed together. Look around, Im sure you have heard of someone. Just costs alot of $$$ to build a Deere up right, well, that big anyhow. Its been a while since you been round, or at least seen your name on this board, I grew up on a deere, but got red blood, but, Dad still got a deere,, and this past weekend, it kicked a$$ and took names later in deadweight, We need a good deere to out run em in this time, put the right color of yellow in that stripe that goes you know where!! Good to hear from you, All Im saying is, you already know. Now fix it, and bring it over to Indiana and put them back in the prairie, like only, a JOHN DEERE can do. Right DCtom? ChadS

Heard it from the horses mouth himself. said the whole clutch was wobling, he did not pull the heavy mods,,,, only the 55-65. it worked really hard, lot of $$$ in that G, still never ran like it should. Chad

Well, Id think a 900 would too, just none round that pull. A DC,,, It would have to be bigger than your old modified DC. But, that tractor wasnt bad. How big can they go? and could it be done? I still think a certain G JD can whoop on em. Chad

Hey Tom,, in reply to dctom, 06-20-2005 16:01:33
President needs to fix the SM and put an IH in there with the molines. That one aint too bad of puller. Wonder what a warmed over 44 massey would do? Pretty big engine in those too. course, all that bigger hp mite bite em later on this year, who knows, may not be any left together as much torque goes through em. Loose ends come apart. Stubb's SM sitting in the shed! A sleeper, that one will run, Ive seen it. Would blow Metcalf's SM out of the water. Who knows, sleepers may wake up, come put on a show. What do you think of Hoppers M? Looking tougher I think, Not Dc tough,,, it holds its own. I still got that Super M in the shed,,, Akron's pull on July 2nd, Well, it will be a fun local class, Terry, he has a 70 JD, Our SM, I got a cousin that has another M, I mean, yeah, some down home bragging rights gonna fly! That track has been sitting still for 2 years now, If it hadnt rained last year, I leveled it off last year, just disked, and graded about 4 inches off, cleaned the loose stuff off, it looked pretty good. Doing the same thing this year. ChadS

Thank you for all the info. I guess I need to order a crank for starters. Gotta find one I can send him first. If anybody knows of a good stock crank I can buy it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again Tyler

I got one, the flywheel had a taperlock, The tractor was torn apart for a rebuild, sat apart too long, journals got a little rusty, if you can have them turned, or maybe polished, its surface rusty, if you run a taper lock flywheel, mite work. Chad
