I recently got an engine kit from you guys with the off set wrist pin bushings. Everything went together great with no problems. It went in a 450 block with 450 head. The head was shaved .60. It runs great and i got more H.P than you guys said i would which is great. My problem is that everytime i start the tractor i have to choke it. Hot or cold. When its running and you throttle up it hesitates then blows a little black smoke. Going down the track it runs great, never stutters or skips a beat. The carb has been jetted and had the venturi bored by a friend of mine but i'm not sure to what extent. I run electronic ignition with autolite 388 plugs gapped at .30. I also run vp racing fuel which i believe is around 105-112 octane. Any idea what the problem is? My buddy has the same motor with same things done and his runs starts and operates great. Any advice is appreciated!

It could be carb, or the ignition. Usually the electronic kit helps starting and overall runability, anyone who has done this can tell a difference. I built a 450 that was a hard starting engine, it had points, and a 12v coil, but, it was a low voltage coil, you could jump the resistor, and it fired right up every time. I put an accel super stock coil on it, no resistor and it solved the problem. But, that was a differnt tractor too,,,, Carb,,,, Need to know how big that venturi was bored out to. the offset kit engines, like the #29-33 ventrui. it does take a bit bigger venturi. Which carb bowl are you running, and how big did you go with the jets? usually on a stutter, or hesitation with no load, its running lean, if its rich, it will bellow out smoke, and foul up plugs. Did you have a look at the plugs after the engine was under a load? run it around with the brakes on, if you dont have a dyno close by, warm it up, and work the engine, do that for 30 seconds or more, shut it down asap, and pull out the plugs, light color, whitish, or very very lite brown, is lean, a nice cocoa brown is perfect, a darker color plug, or very black, suited up, means too much fuel. Can you back the main load adjustment out all the way, and make it run very rich, smoke black? If not, you may need to go a bit bigger on the jetting, or, if you can, you may need yet a bigger venturi. Let me know what you did to yours, email is open too. Chads
