Hey guys,, We got a 70 gasser in the shop, we put it all back together, to find the pistons were shot in the bores. We bought a set of JD G 6-1/8th bore pistons to install in the ol 70,, Ill have to cut them down just a tad at the top,, maybe even remove the top ring,, but making it fit and not hit the spark plug. has anyone ever done this? How many HP do you think it could make? Chad

The G used a longer block than the 70 gas or LP's which explains the too tall piston. I'm certain somebody makes an off the shelf model 70 6-1/8" 70 gas/LP piston. Them cylinder walls are getting awful thin and will flex some. Extra heat will be soaking into the coolant through those thinner walls. Sounds like there will be lots of compression. Flame travel maybe shrouded from the plug into the main combustion chamber. A MSD ignition will help that some. With that extra compression and extra airflow. The main jets and metering jets from a 70 all-fuel maybe needed.

we are going to cut them back quite a bit,,, may even lose the top ring,, I dont really want to see it much over 8 to 1 due tothe block being thin. Yeah found a few sets of those pistons, but want a million bucks for em, or it seems that way,, LOL! with all the stuff the 70 has,, duplex carb, and I think a little better cam than the older one had,, should be a strong ol 70. I think its going to get a electronic conversion for the ign,,, so that may help,,, you think it will run hotter than usual? nothing has been done tothe head, just rebuilt thats it,, new crank, etc etc,, it really ran good, but knocked,,, found the ring lands onthe pistons were shot and the rings were floating, and 1 cyl smoked pretty good,, it didnt do this at first when we first fired it up,, seemed to take bout 2 hrs running to create the problems,, but bad ring lands,,, so it probably held the oil from installation, and finally burned it all out and let the rings move more,,, Just going to cutthe top diameter of the piston to match up tothe 70,, gonna leave just a little in the center of the piston to make a little more compression,, before it had 100 and 85 psi on the compression,,, Chad

Did you ever get the G fixed? It mite pick up 3 or 4 hp,,, I have been told that the all fuel engines were a different block,, longer,,, and had the 6-1/8th bore,,, Ive yet to read up anything to back that up,,,, Yeah ive got an extra 70 block too, but its busted at the bottom of the sleeve, so it would make a good boring block and make a sleeve to go inside. its a gasser,, not an all fuel tractor,, stock stroke,, I think the block can take it,, its going to be a deadweight puller I think,,,,, the guy who owns it wont say exactly what he is going to do with it. All I can say is,, everything is all new in it soon as we get the block n pistons back from the machine shop. get that G running !!!!! git r done! Chad

Yes the 70 all fuel tractors had the same bore and stroke as a G. The stock cubic inches are 412.5.

Were the blocks interchangable from the ll fuel 70's to the G? if so,, there is a cheap duplex head set up for the G!! If u find em that is,,,, They did not make many all fuel 70's did they? Chad

yes, it would be cheap, but you hit the nail on the head "if you can find them", so now there expensive casue there rare. my book says they made something like 2,964 of these. i could have bought the whole running tractor all fuel 70 for 2300, i kick myself for not..HAHA..

Still waiting for the block to come back from the machine shop.. trying a few things different... but basically the same setup.. it it doesn't hold.. we'll take a different route.. I was thinking that the compression height was about 4 3/8 for the 70 gas pistons.. I think you know the plan... You'll have to send me some pics of the pistons when you get them done... going to take some cutting to get to 8 to 1... A little low for a puller??? I think the LP's were in that range... JDGnut

I can do that,,, it dont take much power to pull deadweight, and Im thinking that is what this tractor will be used for. The owner kinda smiles when I ask him,,, he says just fix the damn thing will ya??!! LOL!! We pull our 730 gas with him for he has a G as well,,, betcha We will be seeing it in our class,, kicking tail and taking names later,,,, I dont know,, but a 2 cyl Deere is the tractor to beat in deadweight pulls,,,, its funny sometimes to watch the hot rods go in there rev em up, have turbo's nitrous,, and put everyone in danger, and then spin out and not move the sled,, then a old Johnny Popper comes out and walks the sled right out. It will be couple weeks before we get it all back, and take some photos,, but youll be the first to see em. What did you do different on the G?? Chad
