The place where I'm getting my engine rebuild parts for a 4-53 Detroit say I shouldnt turn it over 2800 rpms.

The class limit is 3000 rpms and I feel a stock 4-53 Detroit should easily turn 3000 with no problems.Am I wrong?I've heard of some turning them 3300 rpms.

I Have a 1900 with the 4 valve head , 21:1 pistons,n70 injectors. I have it set at 3100 rpm and it runs just fine. I would not recomend running it all day at that ,but for short bursts such as tractor pulling it should be fine. A friend of mine was the service manager at a detroit shop in the era when 2 cycle detroits where in there heyday, and he says it wont hurt it? Make sure your valve train is in good shape and your injector timing hieght is on the money, and you shouldnt have any problems running 3000 plus. And boy do they sound sweet at that rpm!! Incidently I am useing my 1900 to haul 3 loads of hay( about 600 bales ) about 10 miles down the road tomorrow morning. I imagine we will get some stares when we go thru town!!
Is your detroit in a 1900 or a 1950? Are you adding a turbo for the class you are pulling? We are contemplating going the turbo route and pulling what they call "modified farm stock" here in central ont. can. If there is any one that has experience with what works best to make the most power with a 453 it would be nice of you to share your knowledge with us detroit nuts.

High lift or low lift cam? Have you updated the valve, cam follower and injector follower springs? How much will 100-200 rpm gain during the pull?

I always was told that after 2700 or so, the valve train would start bouncing instead of following itself. Even with heavier springs, causing more wear.

I pull a oliver 1900 It as had head and valve work IT will stand 3500rpm I have it set at 3300 I have pulled it like this with no problems for about 5 years probably 100 hooks. But it is your tractor And you will have to be the judge of what you want to turn it. when you turn them to the limits sooner or later something always breaks

Make sure your timing and everything else is adjusted right before you go starting it, OR you will find out just how many RPMs it will handle real fast. All the detroit guys know what Im talking about.
