70 block was cracked from the outside in. It did go out to 6-1/8th,, looked good, I think it froze up one time, or another. See, A guy shows up with a basket case 70 gasser, and with a dozen or so boxes, and a parts book, says can u fix it? Knowing on where it came from and having bought a deere or 2 off him before,, should have passed it up,,left it in the parts row at Polks. So now I got 2 70 busted blocks, a set of G pistons, and time. How hard is it to put a g block in a 70, and could the 70 head be used? Been told the All fuel 70 and the G were close to the same,,, this is a very early 70,,, Ive got a 6-1/8th 70 block here that I bought years back, it was a used block, but it has a chip out of the bottom of the sleeve. I dont know JD#s and havent looked closer at it,,, Options,, opinions? ChadS

Chad, a G block wont go into a 70 gas, but will in a 70 All fuel. The gas and All fuel heads are not interchangable (1 to many head bolts on the AF). I'm in the same boat as you, I got a 70 gasser from a buddy (free!!) YEARS ago they tore it down to fix it for use, found the block had cracks in the bore and quit, parked it in a grove until I got it.(either me or the scrap man) I bought a 90 over block and M&W pistons for $300 (what a find) now I'm trying to get the crank out, she's stuck in the mains and its proving to not be much fun right now. I was gonna go the same route your taking but only with 720 diesel pistons, after weighing the cost of machine work for the diesel pistons and the posibility of wrecking a block after finding this block and pistons I changed my mind. One good thing is your parts are in boxes mine are in PILES!!

Scattered, missing, find, repair, replace. I think he could have bought a runner and had less in it, but, it will be good after all this. Chad

I wasn't worried about it boring to that size.. that's only .250 over on that block... Just wasn't sure how much I was going to have to cut down on the tops of the pistons... That project is so far down on the list... G-Block.. well anything is do-able... Different bolt pattern at the crankcase.. the 70 gas/LP heads won't fit a G/70All fuel block... Your best bet would be to just find another 70 Gas block.. (since already have the pistons..) The advantage of the G/70 Allfuel is that the block is longer.. (and you would be looking for another set pistons.. as I'm guessing the pistons you have are low compression G pistons, and you probably need an oversize.)

Allfuel
Block # F1305R
Head# F1306R

Gas
Block# F1213R or F2460R
Head# F1215R

You can use the AllFuel block, and use a G head.. that would be cheaper than finding a 70 Allfuel head, as they are usually pricey... JDGnut

Isn't the block on the G different where it holds the cam followers than a 70? Cam is the same on both.

Yes, the "G" uses a bolt-in lifter carrier, while the lifters run in the front of the main case on a "70".
