My farmall M is a stock stroke, 4" pop up pistons.Already electronic ignition, 12v,fine tuned and timed. I am thinking of changing to a 400 or 450 gas head, as LP heads are almost impossible to find, plus the pop ups. Other than cam and carb work, is there any other 'secrets' to give me a lil more 'umph to get back into competition? Right now I am at 54-56hp on the dyno. Also, is it worth while doing 'big valves' for no more cubes than I am running? I have plans to get the cam re-ground and a carb. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks, and have a safe harvest! Rob

Shave the head and add a 1.5 mile per hr first gear. You will crawl, but you will effectively double your drawbar horsepower pulling power. You will never run out of power.

don't waste your money on a cam grind, at stock cube's that will only hurt the low end part of the motor, I've done that before on a stock sm.

bigger valves are unnecessary with that cubic inch. Run thru all the tractor junk yards, there has to be a 400 gas head out there, I missed by two days an lp head 60 miles from my hose, junk yard had three of them, they all went for less than 750.00 each !

How much power are you looking for? 54-56 ain't bad at all for a stock M. If I were going as far as tearing it down to the cam, I'd seriously consider a longer crankshaft. The stock cam and valves are probably pretty close for stock cubes.

You need to have he valves worked and take your stock carb and drill all the holes 2 sizes bigger and have your cam ground and you will be competetive
