Let's know now whether or not anyone is going to Wichita, KS pull because of the truck sled? Curtis and crew does a great job, but the truck sled is ruining that pull! Even if they got the sled for free, it'd still cost them money cause noone likes to pull it!! Anyone know which sleds they're using? Trying to get time off for work on our schedule and need to know! thanks! tkr

I don't get to pull very often, but I liked that sled when I pulled it a couple of years ago. I agree that the pan needs to be set up to drop automatically, though.

I wouldn't say that "nobody" likes to pull that sled. I, for one really like that sled. Mr. Starbuck is one of the nicest gentleman I have ever met. I enjoy pulling his sled because he is an honest operator. The thing I like is that the sled is very uniform during the pull. Unlike some of the smaller sleds that load and unload as they go down the track. The Mighty Bulldog sled is more steady. I guess the guys in div 4 and 5 don't like it because they say it is harder to get started. That can also be true for the lighter classes in all divisions. But there are always 2 sleds at Wichita. Usually 5000 and down and 5500 and up for the big sled. Us guys in div 2 and 3 at 4500 and up like it just fine. I think it is a little harsh to say that "even if he showed up for free, the promoter will lose money because nobody wants to pull it." If you have ever watched as he follows a tractor down the track, he is constantly adjusting/steering so he is is always right there behind the tractor. He works very hard doing that. The only thing that is remotley wrong is the diesel engine has to run all the time.

Just my opinion.

I may be sticking my foot in my mouth here but what is wrong with the truck sled? I have never pulled one but have read on here recently about it but not really what it is soo bad to hook to.

Just Curious

A truck sled has steering capability while you are pulling down the track. The sled operator, intentionally or not, can effect your distance by how well he follows the tractor down the track.

Sometimes when I'm going down the track I like to fake left then go right just to see if Ben is on his toes. I've also found that slipping him a $20 bill just before I pull adds about 20 ft to my pull ($1 per ft). I hope nobody took that seriously because Ben is a great guy and I personally think his truck/sled is a great machine, reliable, fast & fair.

Another thing about the Bull Dog Sled, Mr. Starbuck must manually drop the pan, it is not automatic, one second can make a difference in the pulling distance. Although he attempts to be consistent, it is virtually impossible to do so. Voice of experience here.

Sounds like it would be a simple job to install a microswitch to drop the pan when the box hits a certain spot.

I have personally pulled Mr. Starbucks sled with both of my Div 1&2 tractors one weighs 3500 and the other 7500 and do well pulling his sled; for a homemade piece of equipment it works well. I also agree with a prior followup he is the most pleasant and honest person I've done business with

Were I owning/operating the sled, I'd want it as automatic as possible. Anything the operator has to do manually once the sled is underway is something someone is going to complain about sooner or later. And when the pan drops is a big one factor on pull distance. I've pulled those automatic sleds with pickups before, and when that pan hit it was like I tossed out an anchor. I've seen a big fancy self-propelled sled that stopped every tractor in a farm-stock class within 5-10 feet of each other, and too soon, so it wasn't fun to watch at all. So the automatic thing can go both ways.
