The 310 gas motor will fit into a 77. The block is roughly 1 1/2" longer though. It will bolt right to the mounting pads in he frame. The shaft between the engine and the transmission will need to be shortened. The radiator will need to be moved forward and/or another method of gaining clearance will need to be used.

The engine is not be legal for any NATPA classes in a 77. Neither are the 88 or Super 99 (six cylinder) series of engines. You may be legal for USAP pulling but you will need to verify it.
