I have a 41 JD A. Hand crank. Is very stock. I rebuilt the motor last season(rings and valves). Also had carb/mag rebuilt also. And went pulling. Well it wasn't very good. I pulled in the stock 4500& 5000 classes. I got last every time. So i talked to a friend with a Dyno. So i put it on there it had about 26hp. Was wondering if anyone had a idea that would help me be more competitive

Without adding new pistons / camshaft / head work, it'll be really difficult to get her much above where you're at now. You can play with a dry-type K&N airfilter, carb & timing changes, but they'll only get you 2-5 hp at best.

Thanks for the info, I have been pondering the thought of port and polishing the head and intake maifold. I have been looking on the net for some high compression pistons. Would you know of a good web site, or supply house that would have some? About how many horses will I gain. Would it also help if I got a cold manifold???

Certainly head/mainfold work will help, a gas manifold will help to keep the fuel/air charge cooler (denser), translating into more power. You can also shave it down to aid in compression, but make sure that you polish the bowls to avoid hotspots. With that head, provided that it hasn't been touched before, you should be able to take .100 off without detonation problems. Also, have your machine-shop perforrm a quality 3-angle valve job while it's there - be prepared to spend some bucks, as the guides are usually worn beyond usefulness and you will probably need hardened seats installed. For pistons, you are pretty much limited to the Clevite or M&W design, neither of which is particulary impressive. I believe that Hinrich's pistons are Clevite & Triple "G" is offering the M&W design. If you tear it down & want to make power, be certain to send the cam out for a re-grind & make sure that it is ground for power/torque within the existing power band. If you did everything, you're probably in the 35-40 hp range on the PTO, provided the timing & carb are set up correctly.
