Fifteen year old needs help pulling a John Deere 720

Hi I am fifteen and I was woundering if someone could help me I just bought a John Deere model 720 Diesel Standered tractor and would like to do some stock antiuqe tractor pulling with it, my quistion is how much can a tractor like this pull on the stone boat, and are thses tractors competitive in their weight class. We have a 720 on propane which people say make it even better for pulling but who knows. I pulled it last year against an 830 Diesel with 600 more pounds on it and did pretty good. Seems like he beat me by about 14 ft or so but I never ran out of power,I kept throttling back some to keep from spinning as much, just weight and tires. I also hook to s factory drawbar which makes a difference as well. Seems like mine weighs in about 7800-7900 with my 200 lb butt on it. Got another 400 in wheel weights for this year though:))

Your gonna find there are alot of good folks who will help you and give good advice and some who won't. I think it just goes with any sport really but there are alot more good ones than bad. have fun and good luck!!!!

Glad you can start pulling. It is a fun sport. Be safe with. Last year was my rookie year. How did you get so luck to get something that big. I got stuck with a little (CA Allis Chalmers) 2500 pound antique. Well we don't have much time to work on them and it is easier to pull with a 1/2 ton truck. Good luck and have fun and be safe. It will take some times to get the bug worked out of.

It is nice to finally see someone my age getting into tractror pulling. I am 14 and I pull with a R Diesel. the wheatland tractors are best becaues of the big tires and all the power. Good Luck.

It's pretty flippin rediculous that someone would make fun of a fifteen year old young man who is obviously proud of his new tractor and wants real advise. Stephen don't pay attention to the idiots at the pulls just learn from your mistakes and keep at it. People thought I was crazy for building a stock Farmall MD until I beat all of the HOT tractors for points last year.Have fun with it!

I actually posted my answer to your post over on the John Deere discussion board. One thing I forgot to mention that needs to be mentioned is that tractor has a HUGE amount of potential. Have fun enjoy and constantly tinker 80 to 100 hp is easy..... .

Well Stephen i hope you can take a joke better then these crusty old codgers can. it is supposed to be fun i thought. i have driven 720 all over central michigan towing a baler and haywagon. never was lack of power a problem. only reason i got an oliver is every darn local pull i ever saw ran the olivers last because they won virtually every time. they seem to have a better weight and balance, along with the RPM. the engine sets much farther forward, and its designed to pull to begin with.

Just for the record, this "crusty old codger" is 27. I guess I'll have to buy an Oliver now, I was under the impression that my G was designed to pull things too. At least I THOUGHT that was what that drawbar thingy stickin out the back was for, lol.

Yeah, you're right about the green thing. I guess the reason you dont see even MORE JD's at pulls (besides the fact that they weren't designed to pull like Olivers) is because most of them are still out working and earning their keep, not just trailer queens.

your right, my oliver is not farming anymore thanks to a dead tire. But i wont be changing anything too major, because i bought it to plow and disk with. What is a Styled Later model R worth? looks like a later styled A, but bigger.

I agree with Gman, Keep your negative comments to yourself, I don't care if this new puller is going to pull with plastic wal-mart tractors, support all who enjoy the sport and encourage the younger crowd. It beats doing somthing else that may not be a nice clean hobby. To the fifteen year old, your tractor will do fine, pull low gear and let your 720 putt you into the winners circle. You have a fine tractor for stock pulling. Have fun, One guy where we live pulled his in the super heavy class at 21,000 this thing had weights everywhere.

dont let those oliver boys shake ya up to much there just mad because they have a harder time getting 100hp out of six cldrs than we do with 2.keep your hitch point as high as you can and low psi in tires for a little extra traction.720 can be realy tough to beat on almost eny track condition.the main thing is just to have fun.

The low drawbar & short tires with the heavy front end is an disadvantage in the 8000lb class you will be trying to squeeze into. The very slow 1st gear will allow easy starts & stock HP will be plenty. What is the age limit in the local pull?

It's great to see a younger person who wants to get into pulling. And it's bad to see a stupid post like Big Time's. Why don't you give the kid some credit and leave your stupid "my brand-name tractor is the best" attitude aside. There's no reason for it, and I would be just as upset if a deere fan was ripping on some kid that wanted to pull an Oliver. Good luck with your tractor, Stephen. Just keep trying and remember that most of the other pullers will help you out. Just don't pay any attention to idiots like Big Time. He probably doesn't have the knowledge to back up his opinions.

I agree with G man, leave your useless comments out of the boards Big time, why don't you be a Big supporter of younger people wanting to get into this great sport, I bet this kid's Dad wouldn't care for comment, nor I bet the 15 yr old kid. To the kid, First off, don't pay any attention to people who act like that. Second, your 720 is a very good tractor, and when you pull it, use low gear, get use to the way a pull is operated and let your 720 ,under your guidence put you in the winner's circle, not the whiner's circle like other people you will evntually see at pulls. I've pulled since age 14 and drove my tractor to pulls as I didn't have a truck or trailer. I'm now 33 and have been at it ever since. My Dad actually got involved beacause I did. How about that for a switch. I pull stock, middle and sometimes open classes and you know what? I enjoy it all, win, lose or whatever. Just have fun. I personally know of 3 720's in our club that pulled the king of the hill event last year, that is weight is whatever you can put on, the lightest one was 17,500lbs and the heaviest was 22,000!!! My boy is starting to like pulling also. I hope you do well.

I wanted to thank every one that helped me out with pulling the 720. The 720 actually belongs to my father and I. We also have two other tractors, my father has a John Deere model (M),and I own a 1946 model(GM)John Deere, that I bought and paid for myself by working,raising and selling Draft horses. It is now all Restored like new.I have done some pulling with my G, but I don't know very much . I have not seen many 720 pull around here.
As for MR. Oliver man I am not a sissy, I can take a joke, especially since I whipped plenty of Olivers including a couple of deferent Oliver 770 tractors, which I think the G should not even compare with. The 770 that is much newer than my G.
I guess my old John Deere has more heart. Again no hard feelings Big Time.
I am sure I will have plenty of Questions later.
