I am completley redoing a 1951 John Deere A. It has a factory block and head. Right now the motor is stuck, but soon free. When I go through it., What things could I do to give it some more power besides boring it out? I read somewhere where if you would take the aircleaner off, you can get some more power? Is this true? Also I heard of forcing air into the carb and putting on a electric fuel pump. Any ideas are greatly appriciated. Thanks

The fuel pump is not needed on a stock or near stock motor, the air cleaner is a good idea, but dont expect any major gains here , it will help it get more air, but you would really need a better camshaft to help with this area, the cheapest thing is have a good valve job done, port things out good, get a good intake manifold, such as a johnson or heisler, or if that is not feasible, get a factory cold intake and round the 90* angle in the rear where it goes into the intake throat, just before it goes into the head, match up the manifold ports to the gasket size and have the head matched to it. dont go bigger, you dont need it and it wont help on that engine set up. get .125 over high altitude pistons. you can have the head shaved, but dont go too wild with those high pistons, shoot for 150 to 175 psi of compression, you will be able to run good pump gas and not the real pricey stuff. get rid of the mag if it has one and get a rebuilt distributor, use electronic ignition if you can, its better for reliabilty. put it on tin rims and get 14.9 38's for tires, this should make a pretty good puller, you might just get 45 to 50 hp if things go right, good luck, a powerblock is a plus if you can get a good one with pistons cheap, but figure on 1000.00 minimum for that getup.

One other small suggestion - put the 14.9 x 38's on 14" rims and use a 23 degree bias tire if possible. This will give you the traction to match the horsepower you will get if you use the suggestions by Deer Trax Pullers which are all good suggestions. Good luck and happy pulling.
