IH V8 in an H

I"m considering pulling and rebuilding the 304 V8 from Dad"s old "67 IH pickup and putting it in his old Farmall H.

I figure I can do MOST of the logistics...I can measure, and I can weld. But what I"m wondering is, where can I get a 2:1 gear reduction unit/transmission I can mount inside the center housing that will handle the torque of the 304, while still keeping the ground speed of the tractor approximately what it originally was with the original engine?

[Note: Dad died in "91, so I don"t think he"ll have too many objections; in fact, it kinda sounds like something he would"ve done himself.]

I saw pics once where someone put a 2.8 V6 from an S-10 in an H, and then used the 4-speed from the S-10 locked into 2nd geat to get the 2:1 reduction. Just don"t know if it"d hold up with a 304 V8, which is more of a torque motor than the 2.8 V6.

Any ideas? Anybody done this already?

Years ago I did a V8 on an H, It worked great! This was a 327 chevy.I drilled the H flywheel to bolt to the chevy crank and made an adaptor for the clutch housing with steel plate. By flipping the exaust manifolds upside down and useing a remote oil filter all that was left to do was build motor mounts and throttle linkage and put an electric fan for cooling. The gearing was taken care with short wide tires. The engine was kept to about 2000 rpm. we used this to pull 15ft brush hog. It was sold but is still in use today by the present owner.

The starter is where I ran into trouble when I tried to V8 a H. Yep, oil filter too, also the frame rails was too narrow on the bellhousing, the chevy was a bit wide, well, very close to being too wide. Did you move the engine forwards away from the bellhousing, or left it in the original location? Thats how I ended up with a IH 6 in my H,,, I wanted a different powerplant, and still use a H rear end. Chad

The engine I used came out of a car with an automatic. I did not use a chevy bellhousing. I used the H starter on the H flywheel which was drilled to bolt to the chevy crank. I did this in 1979 and don't remember all of the incidentals but the monster worked.
