Most 18.4- section tires have a factory recommendation of a 16" rim. For pulling they will work fine but I prefer an 18" (approximately the same width as the section size). There honestly is no reason to go to a super wide rim anymore for the reasons that Jerry stated. All you are doing is adding excess weight. I have cut 18.4 tires on rims as wide as 22" but that was a case of "using what they had". If you use a rim much wider than your secion width you will not have a straight sidewall on your tire which will cause the center of your tread to buckle upward when you are on a hard pull and will also cause your sidewalls to buckle more readily, causing you to lose drawbar height. Some might tell you they get along fine with wide rims and they probably do. But they could get along better without the super wide rims. Hope this helps. Mike

I believe most 18.4X34 tires say use on a 15 inch rim. That has always puzzled me because on the 18.4X38 it says use on a 16 inch rim. You should probably check your local rules. Most uncut classes say tire cannot be mounted on any rim wider than specified on the tire. Uncut rules usually don't care. With today's tire cutting machines, the ability to cut tires does not require extra wide rims. Simply mount the tire on the recomended width or go an inch or two wider. The tire can then be cut specifically to your rim width so that the sharp edge will be in contact with the track. Mike Aylward might chime in here to give more info on cutting. Anyway, I have a nice set of 16X34 nine bolt rims for sale. Good luck.

J
