Just found this board and it looks like ya'll know what you're doin'. I have a question about truck pulling that I can't find the answer or even a suggestion anyplace.

1. Any suggestions on where I can go for an answer?

2. Here's my question if anyone's got the time & answer:

I have a Dodge V10 and am going to a couple county fairs with it this year to pull in the stock category. What I don't know is what gear to choose.

Thanks for any response.

2nd gear??? I have always pulled in 3rd 4 low. Rev that ole boy up and ease out on it. However, your factory clutch probably won't lock up at that rpm. I run a twin disc in mine. There ain't nothing like hearing a 5.9 Cummins rev up to 4500 rpm and letting it go.

Smoker, what are you running in your Cummins? I'm not doubting you, but 4500 rpm seems a little extreme. I wouldn't expect one to last long at that RPM. I have seen a Dodge on the internet that was cranking 810 HP and 1600 ft.lbs. in a stock block. The guy runs a 12 second quarter with it, and it weighs 7000 lbs - it's a one-ton dually. And it's his daily driver! According to the site he owns a Bonneville record also - 148 mph. I have quite a bit of experience working on Cummins Dodges, including my own, but I've never heard of anything like that before. What year is your truck? Are you running a Bosch P7100? What nozzles? How many turbos? Banks Power Pack? Propane injection? Any dyno numbers? Fill me in.

With a 4000 rpm spring kit in my P7100, I can rev past 4500. When I get going with the sled, it defuels to 3800 rpm. I run really big injectors in my 97'. One turbo for now. No other add ons. I can't afford a dyno run because that is precious money that I could spend on parts. Are you in the eastern U.S.? 810HP isn't much for some of the guys that I have pulled with. Truck pullers over here pull to stay on top. Ever heard of Dave Mitchell, or Kent Scheid from Scheid Diesel? These boys have Dodges that would pull with and have out pulled pro stock tractors. They have twins, blowers, 13+mm pumps, gutted injectors, water injection, cams, lower compression cut pistons, and timing around or above the 40* mark. Most run balanced motors at or above 5000 rpm. Are you on TDR(Turbo Diesel Register)? The knowledge gained from the website is priceless.

Sound like quite a rig you have there. I have been to the TDR site, but not lately. My main focus right now is on my G. I have a '92 Dodge 4wd that is wrecked, and that's my next project - have to have something to haul tractors with. I'm not going to get radical with it though, looking for about 300 HP and that's it. Banks Power Pak, updated nozzles, pump work, etc. Truck pulling is a blast - most guys I've pulled with run old farm trucks. We have a '69 Chevy that we pull occasionally. We ran a worn-out 305 in it for several years, although we did have MSD ignition, a pretty good cam, and one of those funny little blue "fire extinguishers". No low end, but she'd really come to life when we hit the button - go from about 1500 rpm to 7000 in a heartbeat. We beat a few good running big-blocks with that pile.
Had some issues though, spent a whole day helping two friends try to get their 454 running right, then went home to load ours, threw a rod putting it on the trailer. Didn't stop us from swapping in a tired 350 and going the next day though, lol. Sounds like the diesel pulling arena is like all other motorsports - the guy with the deepest pockets usually wins. But I'll bet they don't have any more fun than anyone else doing it, maybe even less, considering the money they have wrapped up and the chances of breaking something. Anyway, e-mail me if you want, I'd love to talk truck pulling with you.

Hehee.. Banks... Hehehe... (sorry my side hurts from laughing... ) Banks has some good looking stuff.. but its way.. way.. way over priced for the HP you get. Like smoker said check out turbodieselregister.com it will take you forever to get caught up on the reading from this page. They have tons of info, but you have to be a member to post, buts its well worth the $35 a year to be a member, and you get a Mag 4 times a year.. (about 250pages, with tons of reading.) The early 98's and older you could get some cheap HP out of them.. and lots of it... an aftermarket plate.. (or a modified plate) injectors and G-springs are good for almost 400hp.. (on a 235 pump) and a clutch too.. but this is really just scraping the surface of what these engines are able to do... All I can say is gauges first.. and dive in.. Check out the page... I wish I could but a turbo or two on my antique puller.. (or a set of twins.. hehe..) Later guys..

Hey JDGnut, I saw your post after I put my last one on. I have access to a used Power-Pak set-up that I can pick up for next to nothing, so that's my plan. I wouldn't pay $2200 for a new one. Mainly I just need the turbine housing, intercooler, and downpipe. It also comes with a full gauge set-up.

G-Man.. I have a friend that has a 93 (I think.. last year of the old body style, with the intercooler.) And he putting out 300hp.. that is good HP for the first gen trucks with the rotary pump.. He has changed t-housings, and injectors.. but mainly lots of little things with the pump.. (He is currently working on a bigger pump.) Drop me an email.. and I'll pass you on.. JDGnut

low range 2nd is the safest for a good pull. any higher you might run out of power, lower not enough ground speed. some diesels in central ohio run 3rd or 4th with a 6 speed but they have so much torque. sometimes the diesels play with high range too, but i know (at least with common chevy t-cases)in low range the power is taken staight though the tcase thus less chance of breakage. try low 2nd first as a base line then try 3rd on soft or low traction track. if you lose rpms at the end of the pull its too high of a gear. good luck and

I pull 1975 chevy truck at the fairs they call the class street legal pickups. My truck has a built 454 ,1 ton drive train and larger drive shafts and u-joints and lockers front and rear. I pull it in low range 2 gear and I have 3.73 gears. Your dodge should do good in a stock class. Have fun pulling.

2nd gear low range. Also I know at most county fairs you have to have drive shaft loops.

Look harder. I am about positive that there is a website for the V10 Dodges. Too bad it's not a Cummins. You'll do good though. Every now and then I pull with a guy that has a V10 Dodge auto. He pulls with me in the diesel class and does real good.
