I have been told that 504 diesels cant be built. I am lookin for upwards of 200hp and several people have told me to just get a gas motor because they can be built cheaper and it would be easier to get the power I want, has anyone had luck building a diesel?

Sure they are! Just remember airflow and pump work

Yes they are worth messing with. I would recommend starting with a 585. They are easier to work with. Their are also those that have worked with them and know the shortcuts. What classed do you want to pull in? There is a lot that can be obtained by pulling a minnie. However, gas or lp is easier to mess with. My recommendation is lp for two reasons, pressurized fuel, no worry for fuel pumps and 2nd it is 135 octane most of the time. It all depends on how much a guy can withstand in the pocketbook.

I want to pull 7500-9500, its basically an open class with a 3000rpm limit, a mm guy in ohio that has several mm pulling tractors said that you cant get enough air into the 504. The standine pump we have on it will move plenty of fuel so thats not a problem. I would also like to figure out some specs for a cam for a 504 or a 585.

Is that engine equipped with "Power-Cells" or precombustion chambers? If so, that may be a major stumbling block, as precombustion chamber engines don't easily lend themselves to big power - look at a 6.9/7.3 Navistar or 6.2/6.5 GM diesel, for instance. Nobody was doing much hot-rodding of Ford and GM diesel pickups until they brought out the direct-injection Duramaxes and PowerStrokes.

drill bits, thread taps, ingenuity and hard work! It isn't a bolt on deal but was told by a Minnie guy it can and has been done. I suppose the only other option would be G1355 or 2-150 stuff, they're direct injected aren't they?

I don't think the 585 is direct inject, guess I gotta ask Mopower...I know you can put a Cat or IH injector in one, but thats the extent of my knowledge..I know where there a set of 504 Case heads laying around...thanks, Andrew
