You wont get no where close to 100 without a stroker. 80, yeah,,, but it will take a good head and cam, carb and intake. 281's in stock form (rebuilt of course) is a tad over 60, some get lucky and get more,, M's lack torque,,, the SM-450 has more from the changes they made to them, heavier flywheel, bigger clutch, better cam, head, intake, carb, and a heavier casted block. if your rules allow, and you want to build a good engine, start with a C-264-281 long block. They are outhere, and can be bought reasonably. Get the flywheel and clutch too. That makes a good set up for a M, and you can modify it from there,,, Ive seen 264's in the 70+hp with a LP head,, but was awfully high compressed, almost too much for the cubic inch. Strokers are the best way to go, they are not that expencive, bout 1000-1500 more VS a stock rebuild. JMHO,, Chad

There are more than a few well built, well tuned Ms out there that have the stroker, good head, cam, carb, etc, etc and still making less than 100 horsepower. Unless your turboing or supercharging it I'd say forget it.

You need a 5 letter word (magic). Get Denny's magic pistons, and Chads magic governor spring, and you should have close to 200 HP (each should be worth a 100HP)

stock stroke with custom pistons 4.34 bore to 4.375 bore, might not be able to push the latter.

Professional builders can pull low 80's

and that is a real number !
