How far can a standard m block be bored without hard block? I am looking to go to 4.25. Is this reasonable?

I used the old timey blue spring steel ring compressor and had to turn it upside down to clear the counterbore. 'Not pretty but it worked.

you can chamfer the bottom of the ring to help ease installation of the rings

Have your block checked first. it gets thin at the bottom of the bores at 4.25. hard block it up to the bottom of the water plate for best insurance. if the block is good, then you will be ok, but still hard block the water jackets. Then, you will have a lip left over from the sleeve flange, makes puttng the pistons in a pain, but doable, maybe find someone to make a ring to fill in the lip. if you dont use a ring,, use a 450 head gasket to seal it up.
