I'm thinking about installing a set of 2.0 roller rockers in my JD 70, but have heard some reports of cam breakage when using them. My cam mearures .625 through the flats, and I don't intend to exeed 20% of stock RPM. I am running stock springs also.Would like some feedback {good or bad} on this subject.

Alan, one thing to also consider in this swap is total valve travel. I installed a set of these rockers in my 70 (and like them very well) but we had to machine about 1/4" off the valve guides to allow this. I have an aftermarket cam in this tractor as well. I am only speculating but could it be possible that your valves bottomed out and made your already weakened cam break? The lift in my cam is more than stock and my cam is at least 3/4" thick. I used billet rods in my tractor and possibly your rods required more clearancing than mine did. I was glad I used the billet rods in mine. Hope this helps. Mike

I have a question in this area?
If you milled your head down to the eye brow on the head, and you shim the support out does it affect the performance by not shorting the rods? . Because the push rods are longer and you run out of adjustment on the valve gap.
This is on a JD 70 also.

Phil

I dont know if you can attribute cam breakage to the rockers, but they will put a little more stress on the camshaft. .625" cross section is getting down there to the point you may have problems, high ratio rockers or not. I bent a cam in an "A" that was .550 thick w/ 2.0 rockers on a JWMS head. The springs have 30# of seat pressure @ 3.00 installed height and 53# at .700 lift, so not a lot of pressure. That little episode did scare me from putting a little more spring in it though. Currently, I am running .680" thick w/ the same setup w/o problems.

I would be interested in knowing that and two more things .
On A 2 cyl JD G that the stock rpm are 975 I think. What is to be gained from them. IE more HP & torque and if so how much. Who sells them for a JD and what would it cost
Is it worth the gain when doing a rebuild along with cut cam and head work keeping the stock stroke.

I'm in the process of cutting down a set of 70 gas rockers for my G. I hope to pick up some power and save money over the Murphy's rockers.
I plan on dynoing before and after but I won't be doing any testing until it warms up a bit.

It would definatly be worth it, especially if you complement them with a cam and head work. I heard about stock JD70 that gained 8hp, and I have to assume that is at 540PTO. From personal experience, JD60 with only +.125 M&W pistons gained 4hp @ 540. 552ci "A" gained 12 (twelve) hp @ 540 and 620 PTO rpm.

Murphy's Motor Service has these parts and they are $315 inc. shipping.
