I'm putting together a MM Z engine that's pretty stock other than .125 over pistons. The compression should be around 150. Is it worth my while to have the cam ground for stock or slightly faster rpms? thanks

A low mechanical compression ratio engine has to stay with short duration and low rpms. Otherwise cylinder pressure is too low to make decent torque. A 7 to 1 and an 11 to 1 engine may have the same compression pressure. Cam duration is what's different. It's also why a short duration cam in a high compresison engine needs very high octane fuel. You can install a very high overlap cam in a 12 to 1 motor and it won't ping under full load on pump gas.

Berry increases the ramp speed to get the valves open quicker, even on a smaller engine it will help, besides the fact of curing 50 plus years of lobe wear

I was turned on to Berry Cams by the late Bruce Mellema. He had a bored out R with Z engine. I think it turned about 65 h.p. at 2000 RPM. It was quite a snorter and a 3rd gear machine in 3500# class (speed limit). The lift is increased and duration slightly, but not to allow too much overlap. I currently have an R and a UB getting them used. Bruce's R was a peppy powerful little monster.

I also use and like berry cams but always had a lot of compression to work with. just wondering what the gains might be on an otherwise stock engine.

What AC said. I'm pretty sure mine has the same grind that's in Ethan's. I can get the grind number tomorrow if you're interested.

Clean up the ports, since you have put this much effort in to it, and call Berry Cams. Ethan Berry (Mopower) (NO RELATION) (sorry folks), is on this site alot, has a # of the one he has in his Z motor. I guess it works real well..Yes, I think it is well worth it.
