I have a 1994 7.3 powerstroke with 245000 miles on it.It's one of the first powerstrokes made in 02-94.I pull a 4 horse steel trailer with dressing room.I also pull two weighted pulling tractors with no problems.

It's OK to have a preference. To call everything else worthless junk is only going to make you look like an idiot. Allison's reputation is earned, like it or not. The rap on Dodge trannys is also earned. I don't care if you have a good one, thousands of others haven't. Sounds like kids sitting in a junior high cafeteria.

I have a friend that uses his old Bronze colored 7.3 Ford dually to pull five (yes 5) farmall and allis chalmers and john deere pulling tractors all over Michigan on a fifth wheel flatbed trailer. All the tractors are weighted for pulling and he has more spare weights on the trailer he hauls and not to mention the huge pile of parts that are always in the back of the truck. I know a lot of you guys know who I am talking about because when he shows up at the antique pulls he usually wins. I figured he has to be pulling at least 30 to 40,000 pound with this truck. It does have a homemade propane injection system on it but that is it. I have followed him out of town one night. He was getting back from the free fair with the tractors and I pulled on the entrance ramp behind him with my car and he was gone in a heartbeat pulling that load. I was amazed. I have a 1 ton ford with a 460 and three of my trucks could not have pulled that load, especially at that rate of acceleration. You could probably find a nice used ford dually with the 7.3 in it for a very good price and easily get out of it what you paid for it after many years of good use. And the people on this board saying that the allison transmissions are bullet proof, that is a total crock of sh*&^! Especially the one they put behind the duramax. Most new gmc pickups are being used to tow a 6500 pound motor home that matches the motor home to look pretty. Not towing 35,000 pounds of antique tractors. I live on a highway and watch it all day.

We pulled 35,000+ pounds of antique tractors over 1,000 miles from texas in a stock Dodge Cummins AUTOMATIC and it never missed a beat not counting the trailer which weights with truck 17,800 you try that with your powerchoke or duraslug through the hills of missouri. Ford Automatic Transmissions are junk i dont care what u say I know of a guy with a 6.0 thats had 5 transmissions in it and he only has 30,000 miles on it and all its done is haul a couple of show cows every once in a while. You wanna see which truck is better hook em on blacktop. The Dodge'll win. CUMMINS EVERYTIME

The Duramax is an Isuzu design. Isuzu is the world's 31 manufacturer of diesel engines. All these partisan shots at a particular brand make me shake my head. Some will swear by almost any particular truck. Cummins rep is good but noisy. If the 5.9 was the most powerful (it's not) they wouldn't have any reason to redesign it bigger. The most torque you can buy is Duramax. Look it up. Powerstroke was much more reliable in 7.3. Duramax had early teething problems, OK now. Dodge autos are legendary junk. Ford is so-so. Allison has no competition. Buy what you like, it's your money and a crap shoot anyway. The last truck pull I went to GM won it all. If I had a wish, it would be a 3208 Cat with an Allison.

Get a cummins or you'll be sorry all a ford is a big powerjoke and a guy down the road has a 7.3 puller with 50+ grand in it and can't even compete because it always blows up thats the only reason ford sales all those trucks is because there junk and they have to be replaced and dodge automatics are pretty good they come with a 100,000mile warranty and if you've seen what i've seen em do you'd be amazed. And a torque converter is cheaper than a clutch. Whoever said ford has a good auto transmission is full of crap strap a load to one and they wont last 10,000miles. A Duraslug is a V8 and thats all it'll ever be. Go with the Cummins with a Automatic you cant go wrong the powerchoke and duraslug are made for soccer moms and yuppies there not meant to haul real loads there just for takin the kids to school in thats all they'll want

I wouldnt hit a bull in the a$$ mopar automatic! If you could get a Ford with a Dana 80 and a cummins with an allison auto then you would have something or a dodge with a front axel with manual locking hubs and a allison. I hate my live spindals on my dodge. They are a great waist of fuel and excesive wear on front drive train parts.

...from one of the diesel instructors at a local vocational college is that you can't beat the International DT-466. In a not-QUITE-a-truck [pickup], he likes both the Cummins and the Powerstroke. He's not fond of ANY diesel sold by GM, but the Isuzu Duramaxx is OK, according to him.

I would say the best out on the market is the Cummins engine. By 2007 Cummmins is making a new engine for Dodge that goes from a 5.9 LTR to a 6.7 LTR and will stick with the inline 6 cyl design. It will have over 325 HP and over 700 foot pounds of torque. Just look inside the latest issue of Diesel Power magazine. I would only get the Cummins in the 5 or 6 speed as Dodge does seem to have problems with their automatic transmissions!

The Cummins engine is the best part of the Dodge, but when it gets a few years on it, the "dodge" part falls apart and your left with a good motor with nothing to put it in.

The utility companies (Electric, Gas, Phone) are the most cost effective companies and they go mostly Ford. Ford power strokes are good for 400,000 miles or more. I talked to a friend today with 178,000 miles with batterys and lub.

Everyone gives Cummins credit for the 5.9 engine. Remember that engine design was the result of a joint venture between cummins and JI Case, no wonder it's got gobs of torque! The Dodge is a good pullin truck as is the Chevy but neither have the ride quality of a Ford. GM seats make my back hurt! Everybody has their favorites, consider dealer service. WE took an 02 Ford 400 miles to Sigourney with 6 guys in it, 24'goose with 1 tractor and a 4-wheeler, drove nice and got 15mpg, no sweat up and down those Ia hills!

ask most ford owners, if ford offered choice of intertrashinal, or cummins, which they would pick. ask any truck driver, or equipment operator, if they have ever come across a good 4 stroke v-8 diesel.

no, the 3408 is a portly leviathan that guys try to shoe-horn into highway trucks. i would imagine they do this to compensate for something. personally, i would rather have a truck w/ a lightweight of around 14,000 lbs. however, for the sake of argument, let us consider the 3208, the v903, v555, whites failed v8, the perkins v8, ALL gm four stroke v diesels(8.2, 6.2, tora-flow v6's), 9 liter IH v8's....all substandard, by all accounts.

Dodge never made a diesel. Cummins powers them. I drive a "99 Powerstoke because Ford makes the best truck and the 7.3 is tough to beat as a dependable powerplant. Cummins motors are the best, especially when pulling, but I just could never drive a Dodge. The new Dodges are a nice ride (I could even drive one) just don"t buy an automatic, no matter what the dealer and there mechanics tell you. They are junk. A Cummins with a 6 speed is hard to beat.

fords auto isn't anything to brag about. it's just easier to make an automatic stand up to alot of torque @ 3000 rpm than it is to keep clutch packs and bands locked up @ 1400 rpm. (peak torque of the older cummins)

That doesn't make sense. To a transmission torque is torque at any rpm. The 4R100 is a very dependable trans. My brother has one behind a 400 horse Cummins and we run it hard, no problems. Also, everyone thinks Allisons should be the best because of the name but they have had their share of problems.

it's easier on everything once it's up to speed. when it's only spinning 1000-2000 rpm internal hydraulic pressures arn't very high. look where the manual trans. have problems- overdrive. torque can be very destructive at low rpm. that's why big transmissions have double mainshafts and redundent sets of gears.

Knew a guy with a Cummins that learned not to lug it with his manual trans. He had some nut come off twice because of a vibration or chatter at low rpm's.His transmission man told him not to shift too soon. Our 03 Powerstroke automatic has lots of engine running problems but at 55000 miles the transmission still shifts good.Got a friend with a 2000 Cummins that is sick of buying 1000.00 injector pumps when his lift pump unknowingly quits working,he's going back to a Ford.Unless I win the lottery I am sticking with a gasser for no more pulling that I do.
