Carb, ignition, and governor work to get the best results. More than likely, you got alot of power hiding, if you haven"t rejetted the carb, rebuilt the distributor, and put a stiffer spring in the governor. Carb: #27 venturi for max low end torque for a setup like that,, those were used in the SM-400 engines. If you can back out the main load adjustment screw on the carb, and not make it smoke,, run rich,, at full throttle, your not getting enough fuel, of course, fuel type will affect the jetting size,, to get more fuel to the engine, all the work is done to the carb bowl, you can leave the throtle body on the tractor, (unless it really needs to be cleaned out) Once you have the carb bowl removed,, take it to the hardware store and find the numbered drill bit that perectly fits your main jet, then, purchase the drill bit that is aproximatly 5 sizes larger than the stock jet in your carb. remove the brass metering stem, and drill out the main jet wit hthe bigger bit. then, with the same bit, drill out the bottom 2 holes of the metering stem. Clean out the shavings, and reassemble the bowl. If you still cannot make it smoke, then go another 2-4 sizes larger on the main jet, (not the metering stem) its all trial and error, test and test. Under a working load (540 pto rpm) the spark plugs need to be a cocoa brown in color. Distributor: clean, and make sure the advance is working, most of them are shot. Remove the distributor cap, and snap the rotor with your hand, if the rotor moves freely, moves all the way, and back again without you helping it, your OK,, but itf its not, you will need to replace the springs. I use the springs from a Chevy HEI distributor, or you can get recurve kits from NAPA. A lighter advance spring will help out throttle responce quite a bit! Stiffer governor springs do the same,, more throttle responce, and it becomes more sensitive to loads applied to the engine. The faster you can make the distributor, and the governor respond, the better the engine can run, especially when modifications have been done. This will keep ya busy for a few days,, you will see a huge difference, and when you put it on a dyno, all you have to do is dial it all in, (less dyno time if they charge by the hour) Need more info??
