Oliver 88 diesel

I just picked up an 88 diesel row crop. I plan on pulling this pretty much stock, just until my M is done. That should be next spring. But how do these 88 pull in the stock classes? Any little tricks to get a little more power, cant spend to much $$ on this as the M is my main concern.

If your rules allow it remove the oil bath aircleaner and hook up a large free flowing K&N type filter to the intake manifold. I would also remove the preheater coil to free up a bit more airflow. Try and pickup air for the engine before it gets heated by the radiator and/or the engine.

Make sure you have brand new fuel filters in the system and that you have clean fresh fuel oil in the tank, otherwise it will start missing about halfway down the track.

Diesel engines like cold air but like to run hot to make the best power. Try and warm the engine up ahead of time and maybe drag the brakes early in the pull for a little more load to heat the engine up.

If you pull the plug on the back of the injection pump and pull the throttle level all the way down you should be able to see the end of a threaded rod and a nut with a slot on either side. This is the smoke or fuel screw and it can be turned in or out. You may want to make a special tool for this. One or two full turns can make a big difference and more smoke does not necessarily mean more power past a certain point. You can even start to lose power.

Air is the big problem, When the pump goes into fuel fuel they often lose power. While I would like to see good running dsl. unless you want to spend some $$ I wouldn't get too worked up on an 88dsl. I have pulled against a few tough ones but plenty of bucks were invested. Make the pump adj. tool out of a fence staple and play on the dyno. I always wanted to put on a direct inject. head and cup pistons off a 283 or 310, along with a decent pump. Too many other projects!
