JD G headwork

I have a styled John Deere "G" that needs a valve job. I was told while I have the head off I should have the machine shop do some different grinding on the valves so they"ll flow more/better. This G is stock stroke, M&W pistons, upgraded cam, and cold manifold. I wouldnt be putting bigger valves in- just reshaping the stock valves. Any opinions on wether this will help or hurt performance on this tractor? I"d love to hear from someone who"s set up like me. I"ve heard horror stories of people overdoing it, and killing the lugging ability of these 2 cylinders. Definitly dont want to do that. Thanks.

My 53 G had 55 hp with new valves and guides and high compression pistons.I had .250 shaved off the head with a cold manifold on it.I had a pertronix ignition added also. She lugged very well.I pulled from 6100lbs up to 7600lbs with 16.9 38 Firestone super all traction.Every now and then if the track was a good one she would choke in the 7500 lb but not many times.

BabyHuey,

A valve job will most likely help, but you'll never know until you get the head flowed. I've picked up 25% more flow than stock up to 1/4" valve lift on nearly every head I've done so far, just by putting the right seat and back-cuts on the valve. The problem with the 2 cylinders is that the piston speeds are so slow-----8" stroke at 1200RPM is only 1600 feet per minute---so the bore has to make up for the port velocity. Also obtaining high BMEP at that low of piston speed is very challenging---that's why you don't see any 2 bangers in the open classes.

If you're willing to send me some specs on your set-up, I can help point you in the right direction on valve size and port size. Cheers.

Jerry"s casts new G cylinder heads with free flowing ports. Your stock head would respond to port matching the manifolds to ports. Smoothing out the valve bowls/guides. And a five angle valve job. Cutting back the "eye brow" that shrouds 1/2 the intake valve is open for debate. Just take a valve seat cutter and cut back 1/8", 3/16" or what ever you dare. As far as grinding the ports out larger, too dicy to try.

you'll have a lot of work to do to it to make it pull it's only 39hp stock you have to double that to make it pull

A "G" with hi-comps running on gasoline with a cold manifold should make 50 hp about as easily as hitting water falling out of a boat. I've seen several "G"s that weren't making anywhere near 75-80 horsepower that seem to bring home quite a bit of hardware.
