Hello,

My son (age 4) wanted to see his dad pull our JD 3020D at the local fair this year. Since I never pulled before, I had some questions about pulling a stock JD.

1.) What common classes will the JD 3020D pull in.
2.) What gears are best to pull in each class. I noticed that there are speed limitations for various classes.
3.) What does a 3020D Weight with 38x15.5 rear's loaded with Calcium. I also have 2 stock weights on each rear and 5 stock front weights. The tractor also has a factory roll bar (no canope).

I don't plan on being very compeditive, but I just want to have a little fun. Any help and advise is greatly apprciated.

I have a 3020D. No front weights, no wheel weights, no water in tires it is 8500 lbs. You will add nearly 2,000 lbs with water/calcium, 300 lbs worth of wheel weights and nearly 500 up front. Good chance you will be too heavy for the 10,500 class. Stick with low gear at that weight.

In the early 70's, I pulled a '71 3020 Diesel w/SycroRange trans, 12-lug cast wheels & 15.5's, but not loaded. Everything else stayed on, inc. 3pt. hitch. Replaced the factory wide front with a non Roll-a-Matic narrow front & 7.5L X 15 tires. With 2-150# weights hanging on the 3pt. crossbar, I was right at 8000#. With the wide front on, I don't think I could have made the class, unless the 3pt was removed. My guess is that you might be close to 9500#. I checked Firestone's site for chloride loading - you can find it here.

Without any pump work, that tractor dyno'd 75hp. Considering the weight you might be pulling at, I think 3rd gear might be too high, think 2nd would be better. But that's my opinion...You got to get your feet wet somewhere, & you don't know what it'll do till you try. Have fun & good luck...

I"d say it would weigh around 9000 lbs with everything you have on it. In any class for your first time I think third gear would be a good choice. There is obviously weight to be lost on your tractor if you really have to, but if you"re just out for fun - big deal, pull in a 10000 lb class if you wish! Good Luck!
