My Dad pulls an IH 450 and has been doing so for about 4 years. He now wants to increase HP. Can you guys give me some pointers on overhaul kits to soup it up a bit. I have done many overhauls before so I do know my way around an engine. MY question is what pistons are best for this and witch ones can be used with an LP head if we actually find one. Also what kit could be used to get more HP if we use the original head. How much can one take off the original head to increase power.

Really just need advise on what works best to get the HP increase he is looking for

Thanks

Hey Brad. It is all in how much you want to spend and how much horse power you want. See you will be fine in milling your head and puting in big valves. You will get right at 60 horses. But if you want to go bigger let me know I know a guy that could set you up with as much power as you want. It's just going to cost you money.

You may get lucky and get a little over 60hp by not stroking, but stroking is the only way to keep up with the competition(atleast in these parts)I have a 370 cubic inch M 100+ hp that I would sell if it would help.

OK so where is a good place to purchase these stroker kits . Are we talking pistons/sleeves and crank?. What is the cost?

Are ther any options to help while still using the standard crank?? Like LP gas head and different pistons.

Thanks

How big you wanting to go? You can run 4 3/8 pistons right into the block with out geting into the water jackets. Any bigger than that you will have to put sleeves in it. With it being a 450 you can run a 7 inch crank. Or you can just put a 7 inch crank in plush new crank rods and you will get close to 85+. It all depend on how big you want to go. I know a guy that could help you but it will cost $$$$$. If you want his name and number I have his card.

What kind of pulling do you do? Low gear farm stock,, or ??? What weight, tire size, and hitch are you running? If your running low gear, stock hitch, (not fast hitch) if you go over 7000lbs alot and run those classes constantly, a stroker is the best way to go. You can get kits that lets you keep the 4-1/8th bore, so that can save you a few bucks. Keep the 450 gasser head! Those are good cyl heads, and you can modify them alot cheaper than buying a LP head, even if you find them for under 800$$!!! 75to85 hp in low gear, you would probably never have power problems with a stock hitch, with 14.9's, or 16.9's would be a good setup. So,, what's you got in mind? ChadS

my Dad is 82 and pulls in the stock farm tractor class .problem is the guys in his class 6500 Stock are all modifiying to a certian degree and still allowed in the stock class. He could move to the modifiy class if he had to.

I believe he just wants to crank it up a bit without getting to involved. What would be the best thing we could do without changeing the crank.

When is the last time its been overhauled? Get a compression guage, run a compression test. Remove the plugs and open the throttle up as far as you can when you crank it over. Record the results. If its under 150psi, think of pulling the head off, have it rebuilt, and if possible shave a bit off it to raise compression. .100 or less will make a difference. If the pistons are flat top style, look into a Tisco rebuild kit. If it has domed pistons in it already, if the sleeves look to be in good shape, clean it up and put the head back on, get it running, and recheck the compression. If you pick up 10 or more psi in the cyl pressure you will see a gain in power. Rebuild the distributor advance under the points plate, rejet the carb, and a stiffer governor spring will wake up a C-281. ChadS

Let's talk more about the aluminum welding. Can you be more specific ? Sounds interesting.
