I need advice on tire size I have pulled in stock class the last year and a half and plan to pull in open class next year

I pull a WC allis with a D17 engine I am currently using 14.9 X 28 rear tires I have available either 18.4 X 34 or 18.4 X 38 for next year

Which would be the best size for my tractor
I will be pulling in 2nd gear with no restrictions on speed or rpm

I can easily turn 2200 rpm now and may make a few modifications this winter

I amm fairly new to pulling so I need the help of some of you veterans

Thanks

I know what you mean I can get in the 6 mph open class at 3750 & 4250 I pulled the 4250 last sat in 1st gear and finished 4th everybody else was in 2nd or 3rd gear

I have been pulling stock and breaking the 3.5 speed limit regularly so I would slow down and then lose all my power at the end

Even so I still finished 3rd in points in 4000 lb
and stayed in the top 3 - 5 all year

I think I have the power to trun the 34's but I'm not sure about the 38's

My best friend pulls a wd with "e" motor, and I've been down the track acouple of time myself... just guessing, you will need 150+hp to be able to spin the 18.4X34 or 18.4X38 in 3rd or 4th gear. You will not have enough weight in the 4000-5500 classes to get tires to hook up so you will need alot of speed.

Good luck, the folks in the no rpm-speed limit classes are very good, experienced pullers. Be prepared to get educated!

Just by stepping up from the 28 inch tires to a 34 or 38" rimmed tire is one heck of a ground speed increase!! It may be tough in low gear, but doubt you go far with a stock D-17 engine in the WC to spin off a 18.4. Id keep looking for 34 or 38 inch rims, but try to find a smaller tire, like a 15.5 or a 14.9 if speed is needed, but wont be such a big tire to rob all your power!

I ran across a set of Armstrong 12.4 38's the other day off a spray coup that were some kind of sharp and roadworn that would be perfect for a WD with a 12/13 inch wide wheel.Wouldn't you know it they weren't 14.9's or 15.5's what I was lookin for!

Thats still,, a big jump and its worth doing. I pull against a WD45 with 12.4's and it holds its own.
