Has anybody ever welded a crank at home and had it ground else where.I can get an old a john deere A main case with the crank in it and thought about welding it with wire feed. The wire is like 7018 in stensel strenth and those cranks seem to be good iron.If i weld it in the mains to hold it from moving.I only would try like a 1" strok first that leeves 2" old crank think it would hold.Just a thought what do you think.

we use 10018 equivalent wire, don"t leave it in the crankcase, it will build up stresses. we preheat crank to about 500, weld, straighten while still real warm, let sit for a day or two, rough grind to about .100 from size, check straightness, let sit another day or two, get it as straight as possible, finish grind rod journals, then grind mains for final straightness. not saying this is the only way, but it seems to work for us.

we don't have a forge. we just heat it slowly with a torch, try to get the heat even and soaked in, one journal at a time. thinking has a good question, do you have someone to do the grinding after you weld it?

You might check to see if your crank grinder would grind it after someone else welded it.
